Poison
Vaults Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
High as the resting sign
We both know you're sweet and blind
Palm struck on the floor
Won't you let me poison your heart?
POISON
Won't you let me poison your heart?
Take it strength by strength
I want you to show me weak
Hold your pretty head high
You'll hear me whispering
Won't you let me poison your heart?
POISON
Won't you let me poison your heart?
POISON
Under your skin, let me fall in
Under your skin, let me fall in
Oh, won't you let me POISON
POISON, won't you let me POISON
Under your skin, let me fall in
Won't you let me POISON your heart,
POISON
At first listen, Vaults's song Poison might sound like a straightforward love song, but there's something darker beneath the surface. The opening lines conjure a sense of coldness and isolation: "Cold as the wind that blows, high as the resting sign." The singer seems to acknowledge that their lover is "sweet and blind," perhaps indicating that the relationship is one-sided or built on false illusions. The line "palm struck on the floor" suggests a sense of desperation or defeat, as though the singer has tried to hold on but somehow failed.
The chorus is the real heart of the song, with the repeated plea to "let me poison your heart." This might seem like a surprising thing to ask someone you purportedly care about, but it speaks to the darker aspects of love - the desire to possess and control your partner. The lines "take it strength by strength, I want you to show me weak" suggest that the singer gets off on the power dynamic of the relationship. They want their lover to be dependent on them, to be weaker and more vulnerable.
The final two lines of the chorus, "under your skin, let me fall in," are particularly evocative. They suggest a deep level of intimacy, with the singer wanting to get inside their lover's head and heart. But again, there's a sense of darkness here - they want to be inside their lover not just to understand them, but to exert control over them. Overall, Poison is a haunting and complex song that explores the darker sides of love and desire.
