Dani Klein, the lead singer, and Willy Lambregt had previous success in the band Arbeid Adelt! and decided to form the band Vaya Con Dios together with contrabassist Dirk Schoufs, because their interests were with gypsy music, jazz and opera which are genres which they felt were underappreciated in Brussels.
Their first single "Just a Friend of Mine" has a Latin feel to it and became a big hit in France, selling over 300,000 copies. Willy Lambregt left the group and was replaced by Jean-Michel Gielen. Even though Vaya Con Dios had success in Latin countries, they remained largely unknown in the Netherlands partially due to being a Belgian band, but also because of their gypsy style. In the Summer of 1990, they finally broke through in the Netherlands with "What's a Woman?" peaking at #1 for three weeks, thus making Vaya Con Dios the second Belgian artists to have a #1 hit in the Netherlands; the first being Ivan Heylen in 1974. The song is about the difficulties of men and women who on the one hand need one another, yet sometimes have a difficult time understanding each other.
In 1991, Dani Klein and Dirk Schoufs decided to go their seperate ways and from then on the group consisted of only Dani Klein singng with various musicians. On 24 May 1991, Schoufs died of an AIDS-related illness, which he contracted due to his heroin addiction. Even though they were no longer a team, Dani was very saddened and the third album Time Flies is much more melancholic than the previous albums.
Even though the music and the composition of the band changed, Vaya Con Dios remained popular in large parts of Europe, especially France, Germany, and Scandinavia, until 1996, when Dani left the music business complaining of too much stress. She returned in 1999 as singer in the group "Purple Prose", also the title of the début album that same year. Vaya Con Dios returned in 2004 with a new album called "The Promise," released on an independent label.
In November 2006, Vaya Con Dios released a new album called 'The Ultimate Collection'. It's a CD and DVD of the acoustic concert in Brussels (Belgium) at 31 August 2006.
In total, Vaya Con Dios sold more than 7 million albums and more than 3 million singles

Vaya Con Dios Lyrics

For things that you've said
But now disillusion's
All I feel instead
Your head is a mess
And you scream and you shout
'Cos you were born jealous
Forever in doubt
Listen,
Listen to what I've got to say
Why don't you listen
Try to see things my way
Now, listen
Why believe I'd deceive you with someone else
Why don't you listen?
Listen, listen, listen
Now, I justify and explain
My deeds all day long
But all you can hear are those voices say
I done you wrong
You want to keep me in chains
But I was born free
And I ain't gonna change
Now listen,
Listen to what I've got to say
Why don't you listen
Try to see things my way
Now, listen
Why believe I'd deceive you with someone else
Why don't you listen?
Listen, listen, listen
The lyrics to Vaya Con Dios's song "Listen" seem to convey a sense of frustration and desperation from the singer towards their partner. The singer seems to be pleading with their partner to listen to what they have to say and to try and see things from their perspective. The lyrics express disappointment in the past behavior of the partner and an unwillingness on their part to believe the singer's explanation of their actions.
The first verse begins with the singer admitting that they had hoped their partner would be sorry for something they said or did, but instead they feel disillusioned. The second verse addresses the partner's jealousy and insecurity that seems to be causing conflict in the relationship. The third verse reveals the singer's frustration with their partner's inability to hear their side of the story, and their insistence on keeping the singer in chains of mistrust.
Throughout the song, the singer is asking their partner to listen to them and to try and see things from their perspective. The repetition of the word "listen" throughout the song emphasizes the singer's desperation and frustration towards their partner. The lyrics imply a desire for a deeper connection and understanding between the two individuals, but it seems as though their communication has broken down to the point where the singer feels unheard and misunderstood.
Overall, the lyrics to "Listen" express a sense of emotional turmoil and a need for deeper communication and understanding in a troubled relationship.

I'd hoped you were sorry
I had expected an apology from you
For things that you've said
For the hurtful things that you have spoken
But now disillusion's
But now I feel disappointed and disenchanted
All I feel instead
All that arises in me is a sense of disillusionment
Your head is a mess
Your thoughts and emotions are in disarray and confusion
And you scream and you shout
And you express your frustration and anger in a loud and abrasive manner
'Cos you were born jealous
Because jealousy is an inherent part of your nature
Forever in doubt
You are always unsure and skeptical
Listen,
Pay attention to what I am about to say
Listen to what I've got to say
Hear me out and consider my point of view
Why don't you listen
Why are you not paying attention to me?
Try to see things my way
Attempt to understand and empathize with my perspective
Why believe I'd deceive you with someone else
Why would you assume that I am being unfaithful?
Now, I justify and explain
Now, I offer a rationale and describe my actions
My deeds all day long
I repeatedly and persistently defend my behavior
But all you can hear are those voices say
But you are only able to hear the negative thoughts in your head
I done you wrong
That I have wronged you
You want to keep me in chains
You want to control and restrict me
But I was born free
I was born with an inherent sense of liberty and independence
And I ain't gonna change
And I am not going to alter my nature or behavior
