Trick
Velvet Belly Lyrics

music  : Velvet Belly
lyrics : Anne-Marie Almedal

Winter morning
It's cold and it's dawning
You are walking
The long way home
With your head bent low
Maybe I'm someone you know
The night is over
And you look cold

A window is open
Curtains open
You look at me
To see if I look at you
Gently you pull your
new dress on
You look good
You look young

Between the moon and the sun
Between the dream
And another day's run
You see the faces
Of forgotten friends

You hear the rousing voice
Of an old flame

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Trick" by Velvet Belly are filled with imagery that paints a picture of a cold winter morning, where the singer is walking alone on their way home. The imagery in the lyrics is evocative and makes the listener feel as if they are also walking down the street on a cold winter morning. The singer seems to be lost in their thoughts, with their head bent low, perhaps thinking about someone they know or reflecting on the night that has just passed.

As the singer walks down the street, they notice a window that is open and the curtains are drawn. The singer glances inside the window to see if anyone is looking back at them. They see someone putting on a new dress, which seems to make them feel good and young again. This observation could be a mix of envy and admiration to the person getting ready for the day. The lyrics use gentle and subtle language to describe this moment, which gives the impression that the singer doesn't want to disturb the peace of the scene.

The lyrics of "Trick" suggest a sense of nostalgia, which becomes more obvious towards the end of the song. The singer recalls the faces of forgotten friends and the voice of an old flame. This moment could be a reflection of the singer's life, where they are looking back on their past and reminiscing about people they have lost touch with. The line "between the dream and another day's run" shows that the singer is in a transitional phase in their life, where they are not quite sure what the future holds for them.

I was not familiar with this group. I like their sound very much. The lyrics are simple, but full of truth. Anne Marie's voice is pure and perfect. Thank you for sharing a wonderful song. ~ Sandy

‘Easy’ pleasantly caught my attention as the credits rolled at the end of Famke’s RomCom ‘Love & Sex’.

@RondelRo

By the way, I thought they released only 6 official studio albums: Colours, Little Lies, The Window Tree, The Landing, Lucia, and Velvet Belly. They have a sort of B-sides compilation as well called Lost Songs and Mixed Blessings, but as far as I know, it was only released as an add-on to the deluxe version of Velvet Belly. Is there an album I'm missing?

@RondelRo

Nice of you to put up the original album version of the song, which I prefer to the Boiler House edit single version that's from the movie and re-release of Lucia. They're one of my favorite bands...
