The band formed in 2002 and was active until 2008, when Weiland left the band abruptly to rejoin Stone Temple Pilots.
In 2004, the band achieved commercial success with their debut album, Contraband. Despite positive reviews, some critics initially described Velvet Revolver as a mere combination of Stone Temple Pilots and Guns N'Roses, and criticizing them for a "disconnection" between Weiland and the rest of the band. With their single "Slither", they won the 2005 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance. The band released Libertad in 2007, driven by the release of the single "She Builds Quick Machines", and embarked on a tour with Alice in Chains.
In April 2008, Weiland was fired from Velvet Revolver and reunited with Stone Temple Pilots. Velvet Revolver was put on indefinite hiatus and in November of that year, requested to be released by their record label RCA Records to allow themselves "complete freedom to go through whatever process it would take to accomplish" replacing Weiland.
Although Velvet Revolver worked on new material and auditioned new singers following Scott Weiland's departure, the band has not released any new material and only performed publicly once since 2008, when they reunited with Weiland for a one-off reunion show on January 12, 2012, at a benefit concert. This proved to be their last performance together before Weiland's death on December 3, 2015. Slash and McKagan later rejoined Guns N' Roses in 2016. On December 3, 2015, Weiland was found dead on his tour bus around 9 pm, one day before he was to perform in Minnesota with his band the Wildabouts, which ended the possible reunion. Both Slash and McKagan rejoined Guns N' Roses in 2016.

@Joseph McDermott Showing up late for an audition with a band is disrespectful no matter who it is. In this case it was a couple of hall of fame caliber rockers and the audition was in the morning, not in the evening which is a busy time for guys at this level. Bad optics from the beginning.

@Marshal Magooo all your comments might be well intended, but they are garbage. When you go for an audition, you are basically asking to join the band. As for making money, I think it was a joint effort. If Scott made that band the money then he would've made the same amount for himself on his solo album 12 Bar Blues . Similarly, Slash and Duff didn't sell all that much for their earlier solo albums (although Slash did for his later post-VR solo albums). I do reckon Scott was the best choice for the band. It wasn't GnR. It wasn't STP. It was something completely different. Having said that, the fact that everyone in the crowd at the Velvet Revolver gig I went to in 2005 were for the GnR side of the band completely refutes your argument.

@George Karson That whole reality TV idea they had like Rockstar Supernova was always ridiculous. Scott was the right choice (certainly not Sebastian Bach, who I like, but Scott had a depth to him that Baz never had) but it was just sad that he couldn't keep it together, either with VR or STP.

And I agree but this has nothing to do with Axl Rose why do they compare him to him. Axl didn't have a substance abuse problem, he dabbled in it yes, but he was the one that did not have the abuse problem. There's no similarities there. Axl and the band are by far a hundred times better than what anybody can ever do I don't know how to say this without sounding like an ass but what I'm trying to say is they've already made their Mark in the world. Unfortunately slash and Duff should have created new songs instead of doing the same ones. Make Velvet revolver known for Velvet revolver not for guns n' roses exes. You already got the best / and Duff, make it better.
