You Got No Right
Velvet Revolver Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I fell through the ice
She won't be coming back again
It never wins to lie
She said you'll never have no rights

I've took it farther on the outside
I've took it nearly to the brink
And if you've seen me on the outside
You would have barely seen me breathe

Funny right here I find myself
Inside a paper cup
Without a warning or a reason it's a treason
With no answer

You got no right
To keep me waiting here
You got no right
To keep the pain in here
That holds the crown

And if I fall apart on the outside
(You really don't believe me)
And if I take it to the brink
And if I fall apart on the outside
(You really don't believe me)
You would have barely seen me breathe

And if I meet you out tonight
Will you be loving me forever
It's always over after the night
It's always colder after the night
I broke through the ice

She won't be coming back again
It's been a year and a night

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of Velvet Revolver's "You Got No Right" describe a failed relationship that has left the singer heartbroken and disconnected from the world around him. He's fallen through the ice and his lover isn't coming back. The lyrics are both literal and metaphorical, referring to a failed attempt at crossing a frozen body of water and the emotional distance that comes from being unable to connect with someone you love. The singer laments that the relationship was built on lies, and that his partner was unwilling to give him the right to be himself.

The following verse shifts to the singer's internal struggle as he tries to cope with his pain. He's taken his pain to the brink, with the implication that he's come close to ending his life. However, he's managed to keep his suffering hidden from the outside world, despite the fact that he's barely holding on. The lyrics "Funny right here I find myself inside a paper cup, without a warning or a reason it's a treason with no answer" suggest a sense of entrapment and confusion. The singer feels like he has been boxed in and betrayed, without understanding why.

The chorus is a plea for his ex-lover to give him the freedom to move on. He's tired of waiting for her to come back and wants to let go of the pain that is holding him back. The lines "You got no right to keep me waiting here, you got no right to keep the pain in here, that holds the crown" are a powerful statement that he's ready to take back control of his own life.

That's awesome, your 18 now, and I hope you've embraced it. I'm about to turn 40. I was 4 years old when Guns N' Roses released their first album Appetite for Destruction, and just like you I soaked up the amazing sounds from the era before me. Then Stone Temple Pilots came out while I was a young guy in the 90's. It was amazing to listen to a band of their era. Then, that blended grunge and 80's rock sound came out with Velvet Revolver, it just works perfectly. Kudos to you kid,

and me....i'm 61 and came up with eric clapton, mark knopfler, jimmy page....they passed it down to a kid named saul hudson....one of today's finest guitarist there is.....saul hudson is 'slash'....met up with one hell of a singer and front man in scott weiland.....and this is what you get when good things come together......i've always been a fan of music from my era, but man i've got to give these guys their due....my advice is listen to the old stuff for awhile and see where the 80's sound, the grundge, or any of the sounds today came from and you will apprieciate them all the more

I absolutely love this part of the album. The first beginning tracks are in your face, and STRONG. It calms down a bit at "Fall to Pieces", picks up again with the next 3 tracks, then slows down once before hitting the listener with "Slither" and "Dirty Little Thing", before fading off in "Loving the Alien". I love an album with good pacing like that for some reason.
