Aaron Funk, a Canadian producer of widely varying electronic music styles, … Read Full Bio ↴Aaron Funk, a Canadian producer of widely varying electronic music styles, achieved a reputation in experimental electronic circles upon his signing to Planet Mu (label run by Mike Paradinas, aka µ-Ziq). It's a testament to his production prowess that his base of Winnipeg, Manitoba, hasn't prevented electronic music enthusiasts around the world from investigating his recordings.
Often abbreviated to "Vsnares" – Funk's distinctive style reflects unconventional time signatures and extremely rapid and erratic rhythms. Unpredictable and stimulating, the effect is intense.
Funk's first release was "Greg Hates Car Culture", an EP for the History Of The Future Label, followed by "Salt" for Zhark and "Fuck Canada // Fuck America" with Stunt Rock for CLFST. When Mike Paradinas heard "Greg Hates Car Culture", he immediately signed Funk for Planet µ. Prior to this, he self-released material on cassette tape as early as 1992.
The first Venetian Snares LP on Planet µ "Making Orange Things" (a co-production with Speedranch), dropped in early 2001; following in short order were 5 more releases, all released before the end of 2002. Funk continued recording for a variety of labels, including Hymen, Addict, and Sublight Records, and has also recorded as snares, Snares Man!, BeeSnares, Ventriloquist Snakes, Puff, Last Step and Senetian Vnares.

It has a very different sound. You can hear strings, but not the instrument. I listened to Rossz Csillag Allat, and I could hear the instrument as well as the sound it produces.

Because of this, Aaron used software exclusively (East West Quantum Leap Symphonic Orchestra (Platinume Strings?) short: "EWQLSO") to create My Downfall while sampling real string quartettas in Rossz (also using VSTi software but largely sampled). Unlike actual orchestra, which is not focused on being used as a sample in a rompler, this program is more focused on the sound and makes it difficult to hear the instrument itself.

@Kodadiff This one album is actually different. You'd be right with any "normal" Venetian Snares tune, but this album was handmade by Aaron with synthetic classical instruments.

@RadioheadaphexZappa im almost sure i heard this piece (to my amazement) in a local classical radio station. i have no idea what the name of the original piece though. the track was just ending when i tuned in. i would be glad to have the originals mp3. so if anyone has an idea pls post it! it will be much appreciated.

@MorbosDevilGrinder It may sound like indeed to untrained ears, but I'm very positive he didn't try to imitate the real life orchestra samples he's been using for Rossz ;). The sounds are really different, althrough very close -because so close to a real life instrument, as simple as this.

@MorbosDevilGrinder Nope, actually you can REALLY change a sound from ANYTHING to ANYTHING using the proper tools, equalization and Fx. A famous example is vocoding someone's voice to a dubstep wobble :). That's probably the reason why you were mistaken. Anyway, now you know :p

@MorbosDevilGrinder But it is. I didn't mean to insult you, but I'm doing music since the age of four. On another note, I'm a computer scientist and electronic artist since a good while too. I'm just telling you that althrough MOST Rossz is sampled (not all indeed), ALL of My Downfall is synthetized :).
