The Family Tree
Venice Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Still standing here together
One more storm to weather
We'll get through it yet
So we're gathered here
Holding on to each other
To let go of another one we won't forget
To one of our own
We may be lonely
But we're not alone
Though the leaves will fall
And the tears will flow
May it always comfort us to know
The family tree will always grow
Father down to son, mother to daughter
Thicker than water, we are made of this
From the Earth we rise
To the Earth returning
We'll keep a candle burning
For the ones we'll miss
And when we say goodbye
To one of our own
We may be lonely
But we're not alone
Though the leaves will fall
And the tears will flow
May it always comfort us to know
The family tree will always grow
It's stronger than the wind can blow
The family tree will always grow
In these lyrics, Venice speaks about the strength of family bonds and the resilience of the family in the face of difficulties. The first few lines speak of branches in the wind, which could be a metaphor for the unpredictable and turbulent nature of life. However, despite this, the family remains standing together, ready to weather the next storm that comes their way. The "we" in the lyrics is a reference to the family, who are gathered together to say goodbye to someone they have lost, someone who will not be forgotten. Though they may be lonely, the family is not alone as they support and console each other.
The lyrics then speak of the family tree, a symbol for the continuity of the family line from generation to generation. The passing of a loved one is inevitable, like the falling of leaves or the flowing of tears. However, the family remains strong because they are bound together by their love and support for each other, which is thicker than blood. The family tree will always grow and continue to flourish, no matter what life throws their way. In the end, the family remains united and strong, ready to keep the memory of their loved one alive.
Line by Line Meaning
Branches in the wind
Despite difficulties, we remain steadfast
Still standing here together
We remain united
One more storm to weather
More challenges are ahead
We'll get through it yet
We will endure
So we're gathered here
We have come together
Holding on to each other
We hold onto our relationships
To let go of another one we won't forget
We remember those who have passed away
Now as we say goodbye
As we bid farewell
To one of our own
To a member of our family
We may be lonely
We may feel alone
But we're not alone
We have each other
Though the leaves will fall
Even during difficult times
And the tears will flow
When we grieve
May it always comfort us to know
Our bond will sustain us
The family tree will always grow
Our family will continue to grow and evolve
Father down to son, mother to daughter
Our family is connected through generations
Thicker than water, we are made of this
Our bond is strong
From the Earth we rise
From humble beginnings
To the Earth returning
We will all eventually pass away
We'll keep a candle burning
We will keep memories of our loved ones alive
For the ones we'll miss
We will always remember those we have lost
It's stronger than the wind can blow
Our bond is unbreakable
The family tree will always grow
Our family will never stop growing

Not sure why I’m commenting here, but here goes; my wife, my two best friends in the world and I love Venice. We’ve seen them half a dozen times live, and love to play their stuff in the background at gatherings. I lost both my father and my wife last week. The plan right now is that my amazing and talented daughter will sing this song acoustic at her mom’s graveside service next week. I’ve held things together pretty well up until now. But playing this song tonight made me break my hold. Just a little, but enough to make me realize how amazing my wife was, and how much I pray that we can be together elsewhere. She was amazing, loving and kind. I hope that she is in a better place. Thank you, Venice, for all of your music, and especially this song. It is a blessing.

@@julietownsend1953 Hi Julie, and thank you for your kind words. Having passed the year mark, things are going ok. My daughter is having some struggles, but we have each other. And there is so much going on in the world right now, we need to be looking for the positives. I hope all is well in your world. 😊
