Sing
Veronica Swift Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There is this thing that's like touching except you don't touch
Back in the day it just went without saying at all
All the world's history gradually dying of shock
There is this thing that's like talking except you don't talk
You sing
You sing
Sing for the bartender, sing for the janitor, sing
Sing for the cameras sing, for the animals, sing
Sing for the children shooting the children, sing
Sing for the teachers who told you that you couldn't sing
Just sing
There is this thing keeping everyone's lungs and lips locked
It is called fear and it's seeing a great renaissance
After the show you cannot sing whatever you want
But for now let's just pretend we're all gonna get bombed
And sing
Sing cause it's obvious, sing for the astronauts, sing
Sing for the soccer team, sing for the Janjaweed, sing
Sing for the president, sing for the terrorists, sing
Sing for the kid with the phone who refuses to sing
Just sing, just sing, just sing
Just sing, just sing, just sing

Just sing, just sing, just sing
Just sing, just sing, just sing

Overall Meaning

The song "Sing" by Veronica Swift is a powerful call to action for everyone to use their voices and sing. Swift speaks about a thing that is like touching and talking, but different in a way that we don't have to touch or talk to communicate our emotions. This thing is singing. She talks about how it used to go without saying, before the world was gradually dying of shock. Swift then highlights the issue that is keeping everyone's lungs and lips locked, which is fear. Fear is seeing a great renaissance today, and it is preventing people from singing. After a show, performers can't sing what they want, but it is still important to sing because it is obvious that singing can bring people together.

Swift urges individuals to sing for a variety of people - the bartender, janitor, cameras, animals, children shooting children, and even terrorists. She also urges those who were told that they cannot sing to still sing for themselves. Swift believes that singing is an essential expression of human beings, and it is a way to connect with others. She urges listeners to sing and to not be afraid of doing so.

In summary, Veronica Swift's "Sing" is a song that promotes the power of singing - both as a form of communication and as a way to bring people together. The song highlights the importance of using our voices to express ourselves and make a difference. Fear is preventing people from singing, but the message of the song is clear - just keep singing, no matter what.

Hear that group of children in the background towards the end? I was one of them! I remember when our music teacher gathered me and lots of others in the grade, and told us to "just sing" the word "sing!" My friend and I were so excited we would jump up and down with each other in between each "sing", because we knew we were gonna be in Veronica's song, and we even got her autograph! Fun times. Thank you, Veronica!
