Serenity
Vertigo Angels Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I'm counting on you today
To shelter me from the grey
Let serenity shine on me
I'm breaking down
I'm breaking down
So save what you can
When you're around
I've laid down my last defence
No fear left of consequence
Each day is the hardest test
Let serenity shine on me
I'm breaking down
I'm breaking down
So save what you can
Let serenity shine on me
When you're around
Let serenity shine on me
Let serenity shine on me
I'm breaking down
I'm breaking down
Let serenity shine on me
I'm breaking down
I'm breaking down
So save what you can
Let serenity shine on me
Let serenity shine on me
Let serenity shine on me
Let serenity shine on me
When you're around
When you're around
When you're around
The lyrics to Vertigo Angels' song "Serenity" present a message of vulnerability and desperation, with the singer admitting to being lost and in need of help from someone they trust. The opening lines, "Star shot I've lost my way, I'm counting on you today, to shelter me from the grey," suggest that the singer feels like they are wandering aimlessly and are searching for a guiding force to lead them towards safety and comfort. They are specifically requesting for "serenity" to shine on them, indicating they are in a state of unrest, anxiety or turmoil.
The repeated refrain of "I'm breaking down, I'm breaking down" further emphasizes the singer's emotional state, and highlights the urgency of their need for help. The line "So save what you can" could be taken as a plea to the person they are counting on to help them with the remainder of their coping abilities. The last verse, "I've laid down my last defence, no fear left of consequence, each day is the hardest test," indicates that the singer has reached a point of exhaustion, and that they feel like they have nothing left to protect themselves with, and are ready to face consequences for whatever their actions may be.
Overall, "Serenity" seems to be a poignant request for comfort and respite from a state of emotional turmoil, which is presented through powerful and expressive lyrics.

As someone who was disappointed by both "Home" and most of the Ruby Throat stuff, I can't help feeling that both Garsides are only really compelling when they're primal-screaming, reliving their horrors and channeling them into music. Which is why, for now, the Vertigo Angels album remains, arguably, "Maplebee"'s most important work.
