Roll On Babe
Vetiver Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Don't you roll so slow,
When the wheel don't turn,
You don't roll no more.
I dreamt last night ole lola was dead
Saw the apron strings all around her head
Roll on babe, don't you roll so slow,
When the wheel don't turn,
Well I jumped a train,
When I want to go,
And for where she's bound,
I don't want to know
Roll on babe,
Don't you roll so slow,
When the wheel don't turn,
You won't roll no more.
Well I've been drinking gin
I drank some whiskey too,
Well I got hooked what you gonna do
Roll on babe,
Don't you roll so slow,
When the wheel don't turn,
You don't roll no more.
The song Roll On Babe by Vetiver is one that speaks to the idea of moving forward and not getting left behind. The lyrics suggest that the singer wants to keep rolling, to keep moving along with the wheel. When the wheel stops turning, however, things come to a standstill. The idea of Lola being dead in the dream is a metaphor for the idea of time slipping away, and the inevitability of things coming to an end.
The verses of the song suggest a certain wildcard nature to the singer. He jumps on a train when he wants to go, without knowing where it's heading. He also mentions drinking gin and whiskey, suggesting a lack of inhibition and a propensity for living in the moment. Despite all of this, he seems to have a certain urgency to keep moving and keep rolling, even if it means going at a faster pace than he's used to.
Overall, Roll On Babe is a song that speaks to the idea of moving forward and not getting left behind. The singer wants to keep up with the wheel, even if it means taking risks along the way. The mention of Lola's death serves as a reminder of the fleeting nature of time and the importance of seizing the moment while there's still a chance.

Came here from the movie "Love Hard". I make music for a living and have had a song on The Tonight Show. But this... this is so cool. It's so cool to know that 60's classic, retro style music can still be made. Still be heard.. is still relevant. I gravitate towards this kind of music, but struggle with trying to make my songs sound more modern. It's nice to know I don't have to. This is wonderful. I love that this is out there. It gives me hope people. Hope.
