History
Vetusta Morla was born in the summer of 1998. It all started at the José Luis Sampedro Institute, in the Madrid town of Tres Cantos.
The first components of Vetusta Morla were Pucho (Juan Pedro Martín, voice), David García "el Indio" (drums), Jorge González (percussion), Alejandro Notario (bass) and Guillermo Galván (guitar). Later, at the end of 1998, Juan Manuel Latorre joined the group as a guitar and keyboard, Alejandro Notario left the group, finally completing the sextet with Álvaro B. Baglietto.
The group takes its name from the old turtle of the youthful novel The Endless Story, by Michael Ende. Morla is a turtle who chose to believe herself fair enough to become nothing.
The recording of his first model, 13 hours with Lucy, took place in January 2000. After winning in March of the same year the second prize of the Hortaleza Musical Contest, and the first prize of the State Pop-Rock Contest of Rivas-Vaciamadrid A few months later, the opportunity arose to record a second demo, which would take the name of the band, in January 2001.

The lyrics of Vetusta Morla's song "Saharabbey Road" are about loss, rebirth, and embracing the inevitable emptiness of life. The song starts with the lines "Se lo llevó la tormenta y el tiempo/Nada se pudo salvar" which mean "The storm and time took it away/Nothing could be saved." It implies that something precious has been lost forever, and there's no way to recover it. The final verse repeats the message that we only truly become free when we have nothing left to lose: "Tan sólo seremos libres/Cuando no haya más que perder" or "We'll only be free/When there's nothing left to lose." The song ends as it began, reminding us that no matter how much we lose, there's always a chance for a new beginning: "Y es hora de volver a empezar" or "And it's time to start again."

Siento que fue esta canción la que me salvó en febrero del año pasado. Estaba en la tristeza más absoluta y viviendo sin encontrarle sentido a las cosas. Creo que la parte "Sólo quedó una chispa de luz... Y es hora de volver a empezar" me hizo despertar. Justo hoy, 10 de septiembre, es el Día Mundial por la Prevención del Suicidio, y la vuelvo a escuchar después de un buen tiempo. Gracias por esto, Vetusta morla.
