Gigi
Vic Damone Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Gigi, am I a fool without a mind
Or have I merely been too blind to realize?
Oh Gigi, why you've been growin' up before my eyes?

Gigi, you're not at all that funny awkward little girl I knew
Oh no, overnight there's been a breathless change in you

Oh Gigi, why you were tremblin' on the brink
Was I out yonder somewhere blinkin' at a star?
Oh Gigi, have I been standin' up too close or back too far?

When did your sparkle turn to fire
And your warmth become desire?
Oh, what miracle has made you the way you are?

Oh Gigi, why you were tremblin' on the brink
Was I out yonder somewhere blinkin' at a star?
Oh Gigi, have I been standin' up too close or back too far?

When did your sparkle turn to fire

And your warmth become desire?
Oh, what miracle has made you the way you are?

Overall Meaning

In the song "Gigi" by Vic Damone, the singer is addressing a woman named Gigi, expressing his confusion at her recent transformation from an awkward girl to a desirable young woman. The song questions whether the singer has been too blind to notice Gigi's growing up, or if he has been standing too far away to fully appreciate the changes in her.

The lyrics focus on the bewilderment of the singer as he tries to understand how Gigi's "sparkle turn to fire" and her "warmth become desire". The repeated refrain of "Oh Gigi, why you were tremblin' on the brink" emphasizes this confusion, as the singer tries to determine when exactly Gigi changed and what caused the change.

The song can be interpreted as a reflection on the general experience of growing up and the different ways in which people change and mature. It speaks to the common feeling of being left behind or not fully understanding the changes happening around us.

Some people are
flawed by having

I'm this way with
anything above
elementary mathematics.
Vic's voice does
seem to float along like

Cool! Just so
they don't call
you "Mau Mau!"
We are both old enough to recall
the horrific Mau
Mau rebellion in
Africa (Belgium
Congo?) of 1953,
and the unimaginable atrocities carried
out by both sides.
The ones who use
the hard G will
have to be wary

Vic Damone passed away yesterday, Sunday,
Feb.11, 2018, at
age 89, of complications from a respiratory illness,
at the Mt. Sinai Medical Center and Miami Heart
Institute, Miami Beach, Fla. You
can read my tribute to him by Googling his
YOU'RE BREAKING MY HEART. This
utterly mesmerizing song has predisposed
countless hopelessly romantic hearts
to love.

This is the sort of
miracle song of
which dreams are
made. Too bad that
Vic Damone was not
given the film part
played by Louis
Jourdan so we could
truly enjoy hearing
the film version of
the song; Louis Jourdan could not
carry a tune in a
bucket. This song
evidently has a lot
going for it; 90
thumbs up and ZERO
thumbs down. I can't
recall any song I like
getting zero thumbs down among this
many thumbs up.
(as of February 8,
2017). Exemplary of
how extraordinary it
is for a much beloved
pop song to avoid
getting at least one
thumbs down, I
checked on Johnny
Mathis singing "Maria," figuring this would be my best
chance of finding an
all thumbs up song.
Close, but no cigar;
3 people said nyet!
(113 gave thumbs up)

Molto Vero! Male
vocalists of Italian ancestry really cor-
nered the market here
in Stati Uniti for recording romantic
songs: Vito Rocco Farinola (Vic Damone ); BOBBY RYDELL(ROBERTO RIDASELLI); JERRY VALE (GENARO LOUIS VITALIANO); DEAN MARTIN;
(DINO CROCETTI);
JOHNNY DESMOND;
(GIOVANNI ALFREDO
DE SIMONE); FRANK
SINATRA; PERRY COMO (PIERINO COMO); MARIO LANZA(ALFREDO ARNOLDO COCOZZA); LOU CHRISTIE (LUIGI ALFREDO GIOVANNI
SACCO); JAMES DARREN (JAMES ERCALANI); JULIUS
LA ROSA; FRANKIE LAINE (FRANCO PAULO LO VECCHIO); AL MARTINO (ALFREDO CINI); FABIAN FORTE; BUDDY GRECO; (ARMANDO GRECO);
FRANKIE AVALON
(FRANCIS AVALLONE); TONY
BENNETT(ANTONIO
DOMINIC BENEDETTO); JOHNNY RIVERS
(GIOVANNI RAMISTELLA); all of the
members of THE FOUR SEASONS; and
SERGIO FRANCHI (SERGIO FRANCHI
GALLI). Sorry if I left
anybody out. I didn't
include SONNY BONO
(SALVATORE PHILLIPO BONO)because he was a farce that couldn't
carry a tune in a bucket! ADDIO👋👋

One rarely hears
harpsichords in
pop music orches-
trations. I love it,
as well as the vibraphone /xylophone, and
those heavenly
violins.👍👏😃
It's difficult to stop
re-replaying this!!!

Listening to it today, after not hearing it for years, the first thing that caught me was when Vic Damone said Gigi! My great-grandson, who I was just on facetime with calls me Gigi, with the soft G and hearing it again in this song, really touched my heart! Will have to share it with him soon. Two others of my 17 great-grands call me GG, but with a hard G. All the others except one call me MawMaw. The one great-grand calls me Grandma, refuses to call me anything else, LOL

The most "heart-melting" voice that
God ever created!
