On the Street Where You Live
Vic Damone Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh, the towering feeling just to know somehow you are near

I have often walked down this street before
But the pavement always stayed beneath my feet before
All at once am I several stories high
Knowing I'm on the street where you live

Are there lilac trees in the heart of town?
Can you hear a lark in any other part of town?
Does enchantment pour out of every door?
No, it's just on the street where you live

And oh, the towering feeling just to know somehow you are near
The overpowering feeling that any second you may suddenly appear

People stop and stare, they don't bother me
For there's nowhere else on earth that I would rather be

Let the time go by, I won't care if I
Can be here on the street where you live

Overall Meaning

Vic Damone's "On the Street Where You Live" is a classic love song that has captured the hearts of many people since it was first released in 1956. The song is an ode to a lost love, and the singer seems to be walking down the same street where his lover once lived. The lyrics convey a sense of longing and heartache but also a sense of hope and anticipation that the singer might run into his beloved again. The towering feeling he describes when he realizes he is in the same location that his lover once lived conveys the depth of his emotion. He has often walked down this street before, but this time, everything feels different. He feels as if he is several stories high, and he knows that he is on the street where she once lived, which gives him hope that he might run into her again.

The singer then goes on to describe the street, asking if there are lilac trees and if anyone can hear a lark in any other part of town. He seems to suggest that there is something special about this street where his beloved once lived, and he wonders if it's because of the enchantment always pouring out of every door. He concludes that it's just on the street where his lover once lived that he feels this way. The song's melody gives a warm and romantic feel that enhances the passionate lyrics.

In 1954 I used to take a bus passed this lovely girl's house. It was on my way home from High School. I would be filled with nervous anticipation, hoping she would be looking out the window and waving to me. I married her in October of 1955 and it lasted till she passed away in Sept. 2011. I can really relate to the feeling this song conveys.
