Down On My Luck
Vic Mensa Lyrics

When I get down on my luck I hide behind my eyes in Hollywood
They say ain't what you know but who you know
You need to know someone to know no one
When I get down on my luck
I roll one up and roll around all by my lonesome
Lost some years, I used to know
I know my fate like bullets in a shotgun
When I get down on my luck I hide behind my eyes in Hollywood
They say ain't what you know but who you know
You need to know someone to know no one
When I get down on my luck
I roll one up and roll around all by my lonesome
Lost some years, I used to know
I know my fate like bullets in a shotgun

She loves to dream, living in and off and out of mind
In space and time, she takes a line and lies her life
Away you might just say she stays to go nowhere
Midnight scenes from an old romantic movie
Usually you'd be there today I say was different
I can take you with me wandering, if you wanna go there
Down on my luck
Down on my luck

Do you think about the things you say you don't?
I know you do, white wine she over cool
Ooh look at you, look at you
Do you think the things you do or who you know?
'Cause they told you to, why you listen to 'em?
Hands up, middle finger to 'em
Fuck that, get down

When I get down on my luck I hide behind my eyes in Hollywood
They say ain't what you know but who you know
You need to know someone to know no one
When I get down on my luck
I roll one up and roll around all by my lonesome
Lost some years, I used to know
I know my fate like bullets in a shotgun

When I get down on my luck, when I get down on my luck
When I get down on my luck, when I get down on my luck
Down on my luck,
Down on my luck

Do you think about the things you say you don't?
I know you do, white wine she over cool
Ooh look at you, look at you
Do you think the things you do or who you know?
'Cause they told you to, why you listen to 'em?

Hands up, middle finger to 'em
Fuck that, get down

Overall Meaning

Vic Mensa's "Down On My Luck" is a song that explores the darker side of Hollywood and the music industry. The lyrics highlight a feeling of being lost and alone in a city where success is determined more by who you know than what you know. When the artist gets "down on [his] luck," he retreats into himself and hides behind his eyes in the neon lights of Hollywood. He admits that he has lost some years and lost touch with the person he used to know. The metaphor of knowing one's fate like bullets in a shotgun suggests a sense of impending doom, highlighting the precariousness of the entertainment industry.

The chorus is repeated throughout the song, emphasizing how in this industry, success is often based on connections rather than merit. The line "They say ain't what you know but who you know" is a direct reference to this idea. The verse featuring the female vocalist is intriguing because it appears to provide a perspective shift. She loves to dream and live in her own mind, suggesting that she might be finding fulfillment in something outside of the industry. The line about lying her life away suggests escapism and giving up on her dreams. However, the hopeful tone of the verse's final lines suggests there is still room to explore and to find something meaningful.

Primophobic Totally get it, and agree with you. But I think I know why.

This song is dope as shit. And it's because he had great producers behind him, and experience. I remember songs like Darlin', from kids these days, when he had neither, and I loved it. Nobody told me to find him - I found him, and I stuck my neck out, and showed him to friends.

Vic's made it. I'm happy. He deserves it. But those of us who were there from the start - We're part of why he made it. We were special. And now we're less special - We're just more fans. We're scared, because we feel less important.

And that's bullshit. I was a fan of Vic before. I'm a fan of Vic now. I showed him to friends. I don't get to be mad at my friends because they liked it haha. Let's all shut up and enjoy the music :P. I didn't write it. They did.
