Although born in New York, Víctor was raised primarily in Añasco and Isabela, Puerto Rico. Growing up in Puerto Rico had a great impact on his youth as he enjoyed salsa music (which was immensely popular in Puerto Rico at the time). His singing career began by chance, during a concert at his high school's graduation party by salsa superstar Gilberto Santa Rosa. At the instigation of classmates, who were going on about their friend the sonero, Santa Rosa invited Víctor to jump up on stage and sing a song with him. To Santa Rosa's surprise, not only could Victor sing, but he "free-styled" the improvisational soneo lyrics in the song, and traded soneos with Santa Rosa. Shortly thereafter, on Santa Rosa's recommendation, Puerto Rican bandleader Don Periñon hired teenage Victor as a backup singer. During these years of apprenticeship he performed with numerous salsa greats.
Thanks again to Santa Rosa, Manuelle was eventually signed as a solo artist to Sony Tropical. His debut album, Justo A Tiempo ("Just in Time"), which Santa Rosa produced, was released in 1993.
Asturias

Se yo supiera cantarte
Asturias verde de montes
Y negra de minerales...
Yo soy un hombre del sur
Plovo, sol fatiga y hambre
Hambre de pan y horizontes... hambre
Bajo la piel resecada
Y el corazón asfixiado
Sin venas para aliviarte.
Los ojos ciegos los ojos
Ciegos de tanto mirarte
Sin verte Asturias lejana.
Hija de mi misma madre
Dos veces dos has tenido
Ocasión par jugarte
La vida en una partida
Y las dos te la jugaste
¿Quién derribará ese árbol
De Asturias ya un ramaje?
Desnudo, seco, clavado,
Con su raíz entrañable
Que corre por toda España
Crispándonos de coraje.
Mirad obreros del mundo su silueta recortarse
Contra ese cielo impasible
Vertical inquebrantable.
Firme sobre roca firme
Herida viva su carne
Millones de puños griban
Su cólera por los aires.
Millones de corazones
Golpean contra tus cárceles
Prepara tu salto último
Livida muerte cobarde.
Prepara tu último salto
Que Asturias sestá aguardándote
Sola en mitad de la tierra
Hija de mi misma madre.
The lyrics of Victor Manuel's song Asturias are a tribute to the beautiful and complex region of Asturias in Spain. The song speaks to the singer's longing to be able to properly express and sing about the region, with its verdant mountains and black minerals. The singer speaks of himself as a man from the south, used to the heat and hardship of the sun and hunger. He contrasts this with Asturias, a land of rivers and a solid heart. The singer speaks of Asturias as a distant place that he has looked upon so much that his eyes are blind from seeing it.
The song then speaks of Asturias' history of struggle, including its participation in the Spanish Civil War. The lyrics ask who will be able to bring down the tree of Asturias, which is rooted throughout Spain and evokes a strong sense of unity and resilience. The song calls on workers around the world to unite with Asturias in their struggle against oppression, and calls on Asturias to prepare for their ultimate jump to freedom. Throughout the song, there is a sense of deep love and admiration for Asturias and all that it has endured, as well as a call to action for those who feel the same.

Asturias si yo pudiera
If only I could go to Asturias
Si yo supiera cantarte
If only I knew how to sing your praises
Asturias verde de montes
Asturias, green with mountains
Y negra de minerales...
And dark with minerals
Yo soy un hombre del sur
I am a man from the south
Plovo, sol fatiga y hambre
Dust, sun, fatigue, and hunger
Hambre de pan y horizontes... hambre
Hunger for bread and horizons... hunger
Bajo la piel resecada
Beneath my dried-out skin
Ríos sólidos se sangre
Rivers of solidified blood
Y el corazón asfixiado
And a suffocating heart
Sin venas para aliviarte.
With no veins left to soothe you.
Los ojos ciegos los ojos
Blind eyes, blind eyes
Ciegos de tanto mirarte
Blind from looking at you so much
Sin verte Asturias lejana.
Without seeing you, distant Asturias.
Hija de mi misma madre
My sibling from the same mother
Dos veces dos has tenido
You've had two chances
Ocasión par jugarte
An opportunity to play your cards
La vida en una partida
And you took those chances
Y las dos te la jugaste
And both times, you went for it
¿Quién derribará ese árbol
Who will bring down that tree
De Asturias ya un ramaje?
That is Asturias, a limb?
Desnudo, seco, clavado,
Naked, dry, and grounded,
Con su raíz entrañable
With its intimate roots
Que corre por toda España
That run throughout all Spain
Crispándonos de coraje.
Rousing us with courage.
Mirad obreros del mundo su silueta recortarse
Workers of the world, look how its silhouette stands out
Contra ese cielo impasible
Against that impassive sky
Vertical inquebrantable.
Vertically unbreakable.
Firme sobre roca firme
Firm on solid rock
Herida viva su carne
Its living flesh wounded
Millones de puños griban
Millions of fists clenching
Su cólera por los aires.
Their anger flying through the air.
Millones de corazones
Millions of hearts
Golpean contra tus cárceles
Pounding against your prisons
Prepara tu salto último
Prepare for your final leap
Livida muerte cobarde.
A cowardly, livid death.
Prepara tu último salto
Prepare for your last leap
Que Asturias sestá aguardándote
Because Asturias is waiting for you
Sola en mitad de la tierra
Alone in the middle of the earth
Hija de mi misma madre.
My sibling from the same mother.
