Osanai te ni tsutsunda
Furueteru, sono hikari o
Koko made tadotte kita
Jikan no fuchi o samayoi

Sagashitsuzukete kita yo
Namae sae shiranai keredo
Tada hitotsu no omoi o
Anata ni tewatashitakute

Toki wa ai mo itami mo
Fukaku dakitome
Keshiteku kedo
Watashi wa oboeteiru zutto...

Watashi no mune no oku ni
Itsukara ka hibiiteita...
Yuzugu no shizuku yori mo
Kasuka na sasayaki da kedo

Itetsuku hoshi no yami e

Tsumugu inori ga
Tooi anata no sora ni todoku you ni...

Overall Meaning

The lyrics for Video Games Live's song "Chrono Cross" convey a sense of wandering and searching through the depths of time. The verse opens with the singer grasping onto a faint light and shaking with anticipation. They have travelled far, journeying through the abyss of time, with no knowledge of the destination. Despite this, they have stayed the course, guided by their desire to connect with someone special.

As they journey, they have been searching. They don't know the name of what they are looking for, but they have one singular desire – to exchange a single emotion with someone in particular. Time holds many emotions, love and pain entwined, and as they embrace the passage of time, these feelings slowly begin to fade from their grasp. However, they remain steadfast, not allowing themselves to forget what they have learned.

The chorus is evocative, describing a deeper sense of longing within the singer. They hear echoes of their own heart within their chest, reverberating across the depths of time. They express a wish to create a prayer that can resonate with their loved one, even as they journey towards the darkness of a frozen starry sky. Ultimately, the song captures the essence of human emotions, manifesting itself through the feelings of longing, desire, and empathy.

The Chrono series is an absolute masterpiece, not in small part because of its sweeping musical score. Every time I hear this song, I get goosebumps. I have it playing in my earphones when I run, when I study, when I need a boost of confidence. Kudos to Yasonori Mitsuda for composing such an inspirational piece of music, and thanks Tommy! You were the MAN on G4 back in the day.

Song is Time's Scar/Scars of Time depending on your translation. It's by far my favorite musical piece in gaming history.

Robert Dawson

Thank god, someone who finally plays the flute part of "Scars of Time" with a flute and not a piccolo (like so many orchestral arrangements do.)
