Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town
Vienna Boys Choir & London Symphony Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I just came back from a lovely trip along the Milky Way
Stopped off at the North Pole to spend a holiday
I called on dear old Santa Claus
To see what I could see
He took me to his workshop
And told his plans to me, so

[Chorus]
You better watch out, you better not cry
Better not pout, I'm telling you why
Santa Claus is comin' to town
He's making a list and checking it twice
Gonna find out who's naughty and nice
Santa Claus is comin' to town
He sees you when you're sleepin'
He knows when you're a wake
He knows if you've been bad or good
So be good for goodness sake
Oh! You better watch out, you better not cry
Better not pout, I'm telling you why
Santa Claus is comin' to town

With little tin horns and little toy drums
Rooty toot toots and rummy tum tums
Santa Claus is comin' to town
And curly head dolls that toddle and coo
Elephants, boats, and kiddie cars too
Santa Claus is comin' to town
Then kids in Girl and Boy land will have a jubilee
They're gonna build a Toyland all around the Christmas tree
So! You better watch out, you better not cry
Better not pout, I'm telling you why
Santa Claus is comin' to town

Now Santa is a busy man, He has no time to play
He's got millions of stockings to fill on Christmas day
You'd better write your letter now
And mail it right away
Because he's getting ready
His reindeer's and his sleigh. So

[Chorus]

With little tin horns and little toy drums
Rooty toot toots and rummy tum tums
Santa Claus is comin' to town
And curly head dolls that toddle and coo
Elephants, boats, and kiddie cars too
Santa Claus is comin' to town
Then kids in Girl and Boy land will have a jubilee
They're gonna build a Toyland all around the Christmas tree
So! You better watch out, you better not cry

Better not pout, I'm telling you why
Santa Claus is comin' to town

Overall Meaning

The opening stanza of Vienna Boys Choir & London Symphony Orchestra's version of Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town speaks of a beautiful intergalactic journey through the Milky Way by the singer. Along the way, they stopped by the North Pole to spend the holidays and had the chance to meet Santa Claus himself. In his workshop, Santa told the singer about his Christmas plans.

The chorus of the song warns children to be on their best behavior during the holiday season as Santa Claus is coming to town to deliver gifts. He will be checking his list twice to determine who has been good and who has been naughty. The song emphasizes the importance of being good for the sake of goodness and suggests that Santa is always watching - even when you're sleeping.

The lyrics reflect the excitement of children for the arrival of Santa Claus, the joy that Christmas brings, and the anticipation of opening presents. The final stanza speaks of the enormous task that Santa faces to fill millions of stockings on Christmas day - a reminder that the holidays are not just about receiving gifts, but about spreading love and cheer.

I grew up listening to a Christmas LP from the Wienersängerknaben. Their singing is a fond memory for me. Nicole

I was blessed many years ago to be friends with two of the Vienna Choir Boys. Terence and Lorin Wey, whose mother Peggy Wey-Ervin taught the younger boys vying for a place in the choir. Terry is now a counter-tenor and Lorin is a tenor. Sadly, their Mom passed away on Sept. 22, 2017. Terry was allowed a rare honor while in the Mozartchor. He was allowed to record 2 solo CDs: Born to Sing & O Holy Night.

Merry Christmas, Vienna Boys Choir!

@michaelkrolikowski1431

My mother would always play this during Christmas. They are so reverent!

Another outstanding choral group. The Choirboys wear uniforms that make them look like cadets in the old Imperial German Navy!

@user-gu4dh3du2x

The white crackerjack top with the navy blue pants is called their "Jubilee" uniform. When the boys graduate the choir, they are allowed to keep the cover (hat) as a souvenir of their time in the choir. Once their voices change and settle into their adult range, they can join the Chorus Vienensis, which is made up exclusively of former choirboys.

Ahhh those Viennese boys never age ...
