El Simio
Viernes Verde Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Aquel simio sabio, enfurecido enjaulado,

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Viernes Verde's "El Simio" are filled with deep philosophical questions about the meaning of existence and the limitations of perception. The first verse speaks of the delirium that can be found in a plate full of meat, and the futility of seeking meaning in a source of light that does not offer any relief. The questioning of the purpose of darkness is an example of the existential queries posed by the song. The second verse refers to a wise but enraged monkey that is caged and unable to doubt what it has been told. The image of bread crumbs falling from the monkey's mouth and its inability to speak anything but earthly language adds to the feeling of entrapment.

The final verse of the song touches on the idea of the unknown and the impermanence of life. It asks who will listen when a tree falls in the distance, and who can understand the sadness of a single, lonely bagpipe. The song ends with the rhetorical question of how we can know time exists if there is no change. Throughout the lyrics, there is a sense of yearning to understand what lies beyond our perceptions.
