I meet Vince in an old converted train carriage where we used to play jazzy stuff and rock. IT was run by a priest who played bass in his full rblack robes. We had a drummer, an electric guitar and I had a 5 quid acoustic guitar bought in Shepherds bush music shop. From the age of 13 to 20 the whole world of music changed.
David came along a lot later afdter Vince was playing live. David would have been 11 when Vince was doing live saturday Teenage show around London. Years later!! when Vince was having some emotional problems I was there on and off. David is far to young to have known Vince. Bobby Clark kniows a lot of this stuff.
No one worked harder than Vince. We were mates on and off cos of the touring. The Playboys were on and off and if I recall changed their band name a few times. A lot of us were from West London, and started playing the pubs.When Vince came back he was like a big American Rock star and he knew everyone and had money to burn at times. Vince was about 6 years older than me and think David (that was not his name then!) was 2 years or maybe 3 younger than me so it was a big gap. I know Ziggy Stardust was based on Vince, and if you actually knew Vince you can PM me. They were close on and off for a while, but David found Vinces problem and the things he said hard to cope with. I was star struck and just wanted to follow him like a puppy I guess! He actually paid for my first Fender bass. I later sold it but it would be worth thousands now!!
I changed my pro name to bassbelly, but had to drop it, then more recently since becoming a pensioner to ziggybass in memory of Vince. Tex ? one of the club musicians tought me to play bass cos I started off with a broom handle and a Tea Chest, 'Skiffle'. Touring the pubs I have sat in for all the names, if they wanted a piss or a shag, I sat in on drums or bass. Vince Taylor was and in my mind still is The King of European Rock. No one could equal him for sheer hard work, class and talent. His enemy was himself and his health! RIP BH_ Vince
