I used to believe most people were naturally mean and hateful. But throughout my life, I've slowly learned that isn't the case. Of course, some folks actually are. Usually, these people have been made that way by a hard life, or difficult experience. They're jaded, callous, and distrustful, because they see it as a defense to being hurt again. Or they're in some kind of emotional pain and lashing out (like most mean teenagers).
But honestly, I've found that most people tend to be genuinely kind and caring when they're able.

One of my favorite examples of this is called "the possum experiment". I would seriously suggest that anyone who doubts the goodness/kindness of strangers should google that term. It's another very reaffirming example of humanity.

I've watched this many times but didn't notice the comments, glad I did, especially yours.
I've studied Vincent's work since I was 15, long ago, and traveled the world for exhibitions.
The most memorable was the 1990 centenary at the VvG Museum in Amsterdam. After mid-afternoon entry I paused before the exit to admire Wheat Field With Crows. A just visible sunbeam found the painting as if on cue.

At 02:00 - what Tony Curran does just with his eyes is incredible. Vincent looks at the Doctor as though he’s worried it’s all a mean trick. Looking at the Doctor as if to say “why have you done this to me” - then he hears someone described only as “Professor” start to talk so passionately about him in glowing terms, in a room full of his work (and fans there to see his work). One of my favourite ever Who episodes, and that’s with a weak, invisible monster of the week. All that was needed were these great actors and the idea that while we die, great works never will.

The thing i most liked about this scene is how finished and thought out the character of Van Gogh is. Its not the beard or the fact he has ink on his hands. Its the fact his label is showing on the back of his jacket. Its that tiny subtle detail of an unfinished person which has been shown that shows how much thought Tony Curran has put into his portrayal of the character. Every nuance has been considered. Add that to a fabulous monologue by Nighy and this scene was always going to be a success

This is the power of a great time travel Doctor Who episode. Just like the Pompeii episode, it doesn't try to erase the historical tragedy. Pompeii still falls, Vincent still dies. But there is always a way to make things, even in a small way, a little better than it was better. Whether it's saving one family or giving Vincent one good day, time travel episode are at their best when they show how the smallest change can make all the difference.

I remember seeing this scene when it first aired and found it considerably moving, trying to imagine actually being shown something like that. To put it in perspective, Van Gogh only sold one painting in his lifetime, to a friend of his sister, for 30 Francs. His entire body of work could have sold for 300 Francs at his death.

Yet, in 1989, about a hundred years later, his last painting, the portrait of his physician, Dr Gachet, became the most expensive work of art ever purchased. By a Japanese guy, for $82,000,000.

So imagine the thing we (Person reading this) have a passion about, but doesnt seem to amount to anything... if we were scuttled over a hundred years onto the future and saw that not only did it amount to something after your death, you are able to stand among the best and most reknowned, in all of history, for it.

Seeing this as the highest viewed clip on the Doctor Who channel by over double (25M views as opposed to a DOTD clip at 11M) warms my heart so much. One of the best, if not THE best sci-fi infused historical episodes of the revival, a true masterpiece. Blending a historical story, celebrating a phenomenal artist, some pretty decent sci-fi elements, a truly heartbreaking tale of mental health struggles and a fantastic yet tragic retelling of Vincent's life. All accomplished in a neat 45 minute package. A true testiment to the strengths of a show like Doctor Who

Vincent Van Gogh had the biggest heart - he loved and cared so deeply, more than most people could ever imagine. Deep depression is the shadow side of an incredible love and passion for life…it’s like a monster that pops out of nowhere and feasts upon your soul. This scene is one of my most favourite scenes in whole of entertainment media. It almost always moves me to tears. I have experienced the immersive galleries many times and not once have I been out of awe for this man , his work, his imagination and his passion for art. In any time of the world it is very easy to let go of something regardless of how passion one holds towards it when it does not bear any fruit. But, this great man kept going and creating timeless pieces and used it as a way to see a beautiful world through his tormented mind. I have always been an admirer of art and he will always be my most favourite. I went to the Van Gogh art exhibit a while back and learned quite a bit about him in my time there (both from the exhibit itself, some of the people there and my gf whom I took) learning about his history, seeing his art in real life and remembering this scene made me shed actual tears being in the presence of his art. But he felt like a horrible burden because of his depression. Today medication and therapy would have helped him incredibly well. But back then the treatments he had done weren't enough. I can watch this over and over again. I know the series has a lot of emotional moments but to me this is my number one moment. It’s so well acted you actually feel that the real Vincent is there and the emotional are real.

Van Gogh is to me one of the greatest painters of all times and a most beautiful human being. The pain and mental illness are transformed into absolute beauty in his paintings with his incredible talent and passion. The hreatwrenching fact that he never got his just accreditation of his genius in his lifetime is tragic.
Hope somehow Vincent knows how much he is loved and respected now. He will always have a special place in my heart.
I'm never really into Dr. Who series. But this episode has me crying in silent tears. This episode is pure compassion.

I don't know why, but this is one of those videos on YouTube that just hits me right in my soul. I've grown up always seeking approval because I didn't think I was enough, constantly comparing myself to others. When someone tells me I'm great or I've come so far, I ignore them, thinking they are only saying this to get me to like them or that it's a half-assed compliment. I can feel Van Gogh's pain in this, to know that after years of trying to be the best and only succeeding after you die, something about that really strikes my heart. God I'm deep in tears, I don't know if any of that made sense?

I watched the movie about his life, and it was just heartbreaking him working on masterpieces alone, in essentially poverty, while he suffered extreme depression. You really do hope if there is a god he understood the beauty of his work.

...there is something about a moment in time we are never supposed to view, let alone understand. A moment like this is hard to fathom for ourselves. Vincent couldn't sell his works, even at times at rock bottom dollar. His brother financed Vincent's Paintings that at that time for most, displayed an unusualness many considered off the beaten path. That was Vincent. A one of a kind, his life spent on an unbeaten path very few ever follow. Alir of things came to gather. Vincent's hospital, the Beautiful landscapes and gardens kept up to bring better feeling for those like Vincent in hospitalized stay. and strangely lit nights, Vincent's letters of correspondence, Vincent meeting other great artists of that era and lives by every era that came after, Indeed, Vincent made the best out of what life had to offer him. The outsourcing thing is... he had really a few years experience painting that came just a few years before his death. I often wonder if that is what transformed this professional art medium, more so now, than at any other time? That in of itself is a feat in the history of famous artists far more rare than one might be able to visualize, let alone grasp. He is a Historical Reminder of what makes every person who ever lived great. Vincent showed us, his gift of masterworks were always there inside everyone of us. All this time, ...all along...
