Close Your Eyes
Vincent Crane Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Close your eyes clear your mind and you'll find you're free
Close your eyes clear your mind come on trust in me

You're riding down the highway, you ain't got no highway shoes
But if you're born with nothing child how can you ever, ever lose

Close your eyes
Don'tcha know, Can'tcha see, You'll be free - It's alright
Don'tcha know, Can'tcha see, Trust in me - It's alright
Don'tcha know, Can'tcha see. You'll be free - It's alright
Let it go, Then you'll know, You can see
You'll be free - you'll be free - you'll be free

Close your eyes
This goodbye to the things you thought you had

You won't care when you realize that life's just a dream,
Life is a dream that's true

Overall Meaning

Vincent Crane's song "Close Your Eyes" is an invitation to enter into a mindset of freedom and liberation from the constraints of everyday life. The song begins with the directive to "Close your eyes clear your mind and you'll find you're free", a suggestion to let go of any preconceived notions or attachments that might be inhibiting one's ability to live fully in the present moment. This sentiment is reinforced by the line "Don'tcha know, Can'tcha see, You'll be free - It's alright", a reassurance that the journey towards liberation may not be easy, but it is ultimately worth it.

The second verse paints a picture of a person riding down the highway without proper shoes, a symbol of the challenges that may be faced along the path to enlightenment. However, the line "But if you're born with nothing child how can you ever, ever lose" suggests that one's lack of material possessions is not a hindrance, but rather an advantage when it comes to achieving a sense of inner peace and fulfillment.

The chorus repeats the message of freedom and trust, emphasizing that it is possible to let go of all that holds us back and experience true liberation. The final line, "Life is a dream that's true", suggests that the reality we perceive is subjective and that it is possible to shape our own reality through our thoughts and actions.

Vincent Crane was magical. I met him at a Dexys concert in 1985. I was a teenager at the time, he reminded me of of my grandad who was wise, respected and influential, but at such a young age. He had a hyper intelligent and gentle personality and something very magnetic. I'm still sad that he's gone. Thanks for this beautiful tribute. I'm sure he'd be very proud of you. 🦌⛧⛤🤘

I got stopped by a cop for driving Under the Influence because the cop heard me blaring this song and thought I was tripping.

I was sitting on my porch at the time. Good memories.
