Decervellamento
Vinicio Capossela Lyrics

Operaio in borgo d'Ognissanti
Mia moglie lì faceva la modista
E in questo modo tiravamo avanti
Quando la domenica era bella
Ci vestivamo a festa per andar
In via dell'Euchadé tanto per fare
I nostri due marmocchi impiastricciati
Brandendo lieti i miseri balocchi
Salivan su con noi nella vettura
Felici correvamo in via Euchadé
Strozzati tutti quanti allo steccato
Menando colpi per meglio veder
Cercando sotto i piedi un asse o un sasso
Per non sporcar di sangue gli scarponi
Venite, vedete, la macchina girar
Dal ricco ammirate la testa via volar
Eccoci bianchicci di cervella
I pargoli ne mangiano e noi pure
Il palotino affetta con livore
E le ferite e i piombi ci godiamo
Poi vedo sulla macchina spaurito
Un brutto ceffo che mi torna poco
Ti riconosco in faccia bel tomino
E son caduto dritto a testa in giù
Nel vortice da cui non torni più
Venite, vedete, la macchina girar
Dal ricco ammirate la testa via volar
Ecco cosa capita a chi ignaro
Passeggia per veder decervellar
In via dell'euchadé da malaccorti
Si parte vivi e si ritorna morti
In Vinicio Capossela's song Decervellamento, the singer describes himself as a former carpenter who worked in a district named after the church of Ognissanti in Florence. His wife was a seamstress, and together they eked out a living. On Sundays, they dressed up and went to Via dell'Euchadé to watch people getting their heads smashed in. The singer and his wife took their two children with them, who played with shoddy toys while they watched. They were excited to see "decervellare" or brain-destruction - the act of smashing someone's head - and would look for pieces of wood or rocks to protect their shoes from being stained with blood. The song ends with the singer getting caught up in the violence and being beaten to death by a mob.

Climbed into the car with us
Felici correvamo in via Euchadé
We drove happily down Via Euchadé
Strozzati tutti quanti allo steccato
Crammed together at the fence

Watch the rich man's head fly off
Eccoci bianchicci di cervella
Here we are covered in brain matter
I pargoli ne mangiano e noi pure
The kids and even us eat it up
Il palotino affetta con livore
The butcher slices it up with anger
E le ferite e i piombi ci godiamo
And we enjoy the wounds and the lead
Poi vedo sulla macchina spaurito
Then I see, scared, on the car
Un brutto ceffo che mi torna poco
An ugly face that I barely recognize
Ti riconosco in faccia bel tomino
I recognize you, handsome thief, by your face
Ci hai derubati e non mi fai pietà
You robbed us and I feel no pity for you
A un tratto per la manica mi tira
Suddenly my wife pulls me by the sleeve
La sposa mia che avanza con premura
My wife hurrying towards us
Ma sbattigli sul muso un bel piastrone
But I slap him hard across the face
Che il palotino si è girato in là
And the butcher turns away
Sentendo il suo superbo ragionare
Hearing his arrogant talk
Mi gonfio di coraggio e da insolente
I am filled with courage and act insolent
Di merdra al ricco tiro una gran piastra
I throw a big metal plate at the rich man
Che in faccia al palotino si spatacca
And it shatters in the butcher's face
Di colpo oltre il recinto son menato
Suddenly I'm dragged beyond the fence
Dalla folla inferocita strapazzato
And beaten by the furious crowd
E son caduto dritto a testa in giù
And I fall straight down, head first
Nel vortice da cui non torni più
Into the vortex from which there is no return
Ecco cosa capita a chi ignaro
This is what happens to the unsuspecting
Passeggia per veder decervellar
Who walks around to watch brains blown out
In via dell'euchadé da malaccorti
On Via dell'Euchadé, foolishly
Si parte vivi e si ritorna morti
You leave alive and come back dead
