One of the best solos I've ever heard!

Marc Moingeon

Another masterpiece from this landmark album. The melodies are splendid, very influenced by classical music. Magnificent, immaculate, delicate playing and guitar tone. More subtle than Yngwie or Tony MacAlpine, actually, more than his tone on Mind's Eye. It disappointed me in the very beginning but actually, you hear every note much better thios way. This isn't shredding. Vinnie was at the top of his game by then. And Jordan Rudess who would later be a member of Dream Theater (spelled "Rudes" on this album's credits) added a lot to the arrangements with his keyboards

Marc Moingeon

And you are completely right !! I'm not a guitar player myself...

@Marc Moingeon I am. Not a good one but I enjoy it and that’s all that matters to me.

Marc Moingeon

I guess you're a guitar player, yourself ? I am not, yet. But I love great guitar players (and not only)

@Marc Moingeon love all those players you mentioned

Yes, about Dr M, the players are good but the vocals... it's not singing.
I've always liked Greg Howe, although I'm usually not too much into jazz, (but I got interested a little bit in th emasters of the guitar fusion style). It makes a big change, compared to neoclassical and heavy metal. Howe has got a great groove, but as years went buy, he made sometimes very complex music and forgot the melody (like on the third instrumental album, where the drums are (well) programmed and he plays the bass himself). I like his tone but I never liked his brother Al's vocals on the Howe II albums, that I only bought as LP's. His first instrumental album sounds more hard rock, in the style of Van Halen, than the rest (the drums, and he doesn't really like the drum sound on the first). The next ones are more and more leaning towards jazz fusion with hard rock elements, I think. I especially liek the second, Introspection, the fourth : Parallax and the latest, Wheelhouse.
He made a more progressive/neoclassical album, at Varney's request, Ascend, and also played some fantastic neoclassical stuff (on request) on classical piano and keyboard virtuoso Vitalij Kuprij's first album High Definition. By the way, if you don't know them, I recommend them : MacAlpine played on the third : VK3, and George Bellas played on the second : Extreme Measures, and Michael Harris on the fifth, Glacial Inferno (many guita rplayers on the fourth and the recent sixth, that I think are less good)
