Drunk
Viola Beach Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I've been really trying to put up a fight
Really trying to deal with the night
It never works
I've been trying hard to leave you alone
Trying not to pick up the phone
I always do

I need to get drunk and if you will
It's pretty much unconditional
Is it your love you're giving up?
You're giving up, you're giving up
Yes, I need to get drunk and if you will
It's pretty much unconditional
Is it your love you're giving up?
You're giving up, you're giving up

I know you know
I've been wondering where you go
When you never ring or come home
Ring or come home

I don't ever really know what to say
Must just be something in the way
You look at me
It's so, that's ever running around in my mind
Won't you please just throw me a line?
I'm losing it

I need to get drunk and if you will
It's pretty much unconditional
Is it your love you're giving up?
You're giving up, you're giving up

I know you know
I've been wondering where you go
When you never ring or come home
Ring or come home

Yeah, I know you know
I've been wondering where you go
When you never ring or come home
Ring or come home

Yeah, I know you know
Yeah, I know you know

Overall Meaning

The song "Drunk" by Viola Beach is loaded with emotions of longing and desperation. The singer of the song seems to be struggling with a breakup and is fighting to let go but failing miserably. He/she is trying to put up a fight, deal with the night, leave the ex alone, not pick up the phone but their efforts are futile. He/she admits to needing a drink but the condition is that the ex should come back, which is almost as if he/she is bargaining or trying to negotiate their love back into their life. The repeated question "Is it your love you're giving up?" further solidifies this idea.

The singer then talks about how they don't know where the ex goes or why they don't come back home. This, combined with the line "It's so, that's ever running around in my mind," shows how the singer is constantly consumed by thoughts of the ex and his/her absence in their life. In the end, the song ends on a note of uncertainty with the repeated line "Yeah, I know you know," which leaves the listener to speculate about what might happen next.

Overall, the song is a poignant reminder of how difficult it can be to let go of someone you love, even when you know it's the right thing to do. It speaks to the universal human experience of heartbreak and the struggle to move on.

Spotify put this song in my daily mix. It's gotten me in the feels since. I've heard about their fatal accident on BuzzFeed in 2016. I never got around to listen to their music. Spotify did it for me 5 days ago. Wish I've done it sooner.

The guitar, the lyrics, his voice... ❤

My heart 💔

Edit:
When he says "Won't you please just throw me a line?
I'm losing it."

The way he sang it sent shivers down my spine...

I lost it. 😢💔

always their fan.. RIP...
if there was a time machine I would go back in time to change the circumstances the decisions made that tragic day to prevent such a loss.. and I will change my decisions also.. Terrifically we lost them .. I think they were awesome.. so good to be more than a legend.. . Legends do not die.. but they would of like to see how much people love their music with their own eyes .. those ayes that had a vision in the future in music industry.. those hands that lives to play those instruments with such a passion... oh God why people who work hard for they dreams die so tragically.. what lesson we must learn in life .. we need wisdom Lord to understand these mysteries .. . VB.. always in my heart.
