Qué dirá el Santo Padre
Violeta Parra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Overall Meaning

In Violeta Parra's song, "Qué dirá el Santo Padre," she is critically examining the concept of freedom in Chile during the time of her writing. The first two lines, "Miren como nos hablan de libertad / Cuando de alla nos privan en realidad" (Look how they speak to us about freedom / When they actually deprive us of it), suggest that freedom is merely a word used to placate the population while the authorities, referred to in the third line, "autoridad" (authority), continue to torment them. Parra then raises the idea that religion and the church hierarchy, represented by the "Santo Padre" (Holy Father) in Rome, should be concerned about the violence and oppression happening in Chile. The line "Que le estan degollando / A sus palomas" (They are slitting the throats of his doves) refers to the metaphorical doves being the innocent people who are being killed by the authorities.

Parra then challenges the belief in paradise, saying that it is hard to believe in it when people are suffering so much. The line "Miren el entusiasmo con la sentencia / Sabiendo que mataban a la inocencia" (Look at the enthusiasm for the verdict / Knowing that they were killing innocence) suggests that there is no justice in Chilean society. The section that follows this reveals that the killers do not even feel guilty, as they calmly have breakfast after committing murder. Parra concludes with the idea that even in the face of such injustice, she will continue to sing and express herself, even if it leads to her death, as symbolized by the line "Regao con tu sangre Julian Grimau" (Watered with your blood, Julian Grimau).
