Parachute
Virgil Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

A lonely man leaps from a mountain town
I stop him as if he's half way down
Ask him what he's learned about the trip
He shyly smiles and moves his lip

A great day for a car crash
A pleasant day to make a change
Chorus:
The only thing left to do
Is pull on my parachute
It will take longer to land
But I can stand
And if I can count on you
To pull on your parachute
We will share time in the air
While we descend

Someone take away his gravity
He doesn't see he's plummeting
Gaining speed and twisting silently
Oh, he's sure to hit a street of trees

A great day for the cancer
A pleasant day to play it safe

Repeat Chorus

He is not an arrow
But he knows the rest of us know
That he'll fly and he'll try
And when he comes crashing
The answers will flash in our face

The only thing left to do
Is pull on my parachute
It will take longer to land
But I can stand
And if I can count on you
To pull on your parachute
We will share time in the air
I just care that you're aware
But they'll have to meet us there

(Repeat Chorus in background)

Yeah...

Overall Meaning

The song "Parachute" by Virgil is a reflective piece that speaks about a man who is leaping off a mountain town. The singer stops him halfway down and asks him what he has learned about the trip. The man shyly smiles and moves his lip, hinting at the possibility that he may have gained some knowledge or perspective. The chorus suggests that the only thing left to do is to pull on the parachute. In doing so, the individual will take a longer time to land, but will eventually touch the ground and be able to stand. Furthermore, by counting on others to pull their parachutes, they can share in the experience and descent together.

The second stanza speaks of someone who is unaware of their descent and is gaining speed and twisting silently. The imagery of hitting trees and the inevitability of the crash is dark, but it is countered by the idea that it is a great day for cancer and a pleasant day to play safe. These lyrics suggest that there are opportunities to prevent or reduce harm, and that there is hope amidst the despair.

The final stanza acknowledges that the man who leaps is not an arrow, but rather someone who is flying and trying. The singer suggests that when this person comes crashing, the answers will flash in their face, indicating that learning can occur even through difficult experiences. Overall, "Parachute" is a song that speaks to the importance of taking a risk but also being prepared and counting on others for support.

I used to catch them live at the dragonfly in LA. I have two copies of this CD but the labels they put on the discs ruined them over time. I’m so stoked you posted this! If you like Virgil you’ll love their first band Elephant Ride. Still one of the best albums I’ve ever listened to.

Oh really?

YES!!! I liked this song since the "smashed" episode of Buffy and i just finally found out who these guys are, cause while watching a rerun of "Smashed" i listened and got enough of the lyrics so that the name "Virgil" came up, wow it's been like 8 years!
