The Burning of Rome
Virgin Steele Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Far from paradise
Where the winds of war
Are blowing freely
In my tired eyes
Run the bloody hosts
Of Ares' slaughter
Face to face- with fear and death and hate
Time to say goodbye- draw your last breath
For I conquer

When I die
In your arms
One child born
To carry on

Darling don't delay
For they're rushing
From a thousand thrones now
Cry another day
When the memory
Brings you back the vision
Tonight I die- but my life is in you
On my way- but I want to touch you, want to love you...

When I die
In your arms
One child born
To carry on

One nation, one kingdom, one child survives
One nation, one kingdom, one child survives
I'll meet you again through the eyes of our son
Remember to tell him the price we had to pay
And cry for Pompeii- cry for pompeii!

When I die
In your arms
One child born
To carry on

I'll meet you again through the eyes of our son
I'll return
Open the gates, I'm coming home tonight
Black tears will fall and the flames will crack the sky

Oh I see you cry...
I'm calling you... open... I'm coming home...

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Virgin Steele's song The Burning of Rome explore the themes of war, sacrifice and love. The song is set in ancient Rome and describes a battle scene where the singer is facing death and the imminent fall of Rome. The lyrics start with the line ‘Far from paradise’ which immediately sets the tone of the song. The singer is in a place where there is no peace, and war is the norm. The ‘bloody hosts of Ares’ slaughter’ represent the armies of Rome and their enemies. The battle is at its peak, and the singer accepts that it may be their last. The lines ‘Face to face- with fear and death and hate’ highlight the severity of the situation.

The chorus of the song is a declaration of love, hope and faith. The singer says ‘When I die in your arms, one child is born to carry on’. This line means that even though they may die, the hope for the future remains through the birth of their child. The chorus is repeated several times throughout the song emphasizing the importance of love and family. The singer’s final words are ‘Remember to tell him the price we had to pay and cry for Pompeii’. Pompeii is a reference to the famous Roman city that was destroyed by Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. The line suggests that even though Rome may fall, the memory of it should be kept alive.

Probably the most underrated band in the industry. Great voice and good production.

Pedro FARIA

100% True...no one talks about this band. And that is a shame!

Norse Crafts

There are lots of great songs out there. But PERFECT songs are harder to come across. This is one of those songs, a true 10/10 tune. There is nothing I would change here. This is perfection from start to finish! Glory!

Blind Bosnian

@Andreas Karlsson To me, Blind Guardian is no.1, but Virgin Steele is up there as well. Other greats include Kamelot, Manilla Road, Rage, Metal Church, Helloween, Atheist, Running Wild, Fates Warning, Mortal Kombat etc.

Andreas Karlsson

@Blind Bosnian Agreed. Composers far above most other metal bands, if not #1

Blind Bosnian

@Jona K. There's just too many of them, haha. I actually didn't like Perfect Mansions on the first listen because of DeFeis' moans in the chorus, but it had grown on me.

@Blind Bosnian u forgot: perfect mansion

Virgin Steele has a knack for writing flawless compositions. Some others include I Will Come For You, Blood and Gasoline, Self-Crucifixion, Blood of the Saints, Life Among the Ruins, A Symphony of Steele, Emalaith, Victory is Mine, Invictus, Dominion Day, Veni Vidi Vici, Kingdom of the Fearless and Agony and Shame.

Τιμή στους μεγάλους φιλέλληνες και εξαίσιους μουσικούς Virgin Steele.

One of the most underrated bands in all of rock history. "I'm a savage, I'm a king ,
I fought deceivers , I conquered evil"
