Virgos Merlot was a hard rock band formed in 1998 in Birmingham, Alabama. Their singular album, Signs of a Vacant Soul, was released in 1999, and featured densely-produced atmospheric guitars, a heavy rhythm presence, and the commanding vocals of lead singer Brett Hestla.
Perhaps due to lackluster sales and its lukewarm critical reception, the original lineup disbanded sometime after the release of Signs of a Vacant Soul. The band Virgos Merlot later reformed for a short while without guitarist Jason Marchant. Due to legal red tape, they were known simply as Virgos and released their only album, The Path of Least Resistance, under Hestla and Marchant's old record label, Devine. The Devine was also the name of the band Hestla and Marchant were members of prior to the formation of Virgos Merlot. The Devine's only record, Victim, was also released under this label.
After touring with Creed as replacement for bassist Brian Marshall, Hestla joined Dark New Day in 2004.
Marchant, JD and Ledbetter went on to form the band Red Halo. Chris Dickerson later played bass for Downstem [with JD on drums] and Course of Nature.

Virgos Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
A long and cold December
Is where you found my bitter heart
And now there's something coming over
A smell like lucky clover
Remember as we part
If the world should collapse around you
If God held a ransom for you
I would give everything
I would give everything
In a world so weak and jaded
Where honesty is hated
We stand among the scattered few
And I'll be thanking God that I'm alive
If only you and I survive
After this is through
Sing, sing to me
Put my mind at ease
Bring, bring to me
That simple, simple peace
In Virgos’s song “Collapse,” the lyrics begin with a description of a past memory. The memory is one of heartbreak and bitterness, which occurred during a long, cold December. Then, the lyrics move into a hopeful future that is uncertain. The singer describes their willingness to support someone they care about, even if the world around them collapses. They imagine a scenario where God holds a ransom for their loved one, and they would give everything to save them. The world they live in is weak and jaded, where honesty is not appreciated. However, the singer remains grateful for their survival and hopes that they can survive with their loved ones.
The lyrics suggest that the singer has gone through significant personal growth and emotional maturity. The memory of heartbreak no longer affects them, and they have gained a more significant capacity for love and generosity. Their willingness to support their loved ones even in the most extreme circumstances shows a level of selflessness and devotion that is rare to come by. The song's mood is one of hope and optimism, despite the uncertainties that lie ahead. The singer wants a simple and peaceful life, which is ultimately achievable through love and compassion.
