LA CARTERA
Vives Carlos Lyrics

París, New York
Si por más que yo quiera
Es que no me alcanza
Y aún debo aquella cartera
De Christian Dior
Te doy mi Dios
Un beso en el atardecer
Y una canción
Que es como el agua de beber
Te doy mi paz
Un niño que está por nacer
Te doy la sal que el mar
Ha dejado en mi piel
Te doy mi sol
Te doy mi pan
Te doy mi paz
Te doy mi Dios
Te doy mi sal
Te doy mi sol, te doy mi pan, te doy mi paz
Te doy mi Dios, te doy mi sal, te doy mi Dios
The lyrics to Carlos Vives’ song La Cartera talk about the desire to give everything to the woman he loves, but feeling helpless because of his lack of financial resources. He wishes he could give her a trip to the moon and fulfill all of her desires, and be her guiding light when the night is dark. The line “Que tengas lo que yo nunca pude tener” translates to “May you have what I could never have,” making it clear that he has unfulfilled aspirations and dreams.
The second verse talks about how he wishes he could be the substance of her life and a sweet fragrance on her skin. He mentions that while his hopes and dreams have faded away, she asks him to buy her a Cartier watch. He then mentions that he gives her his sun, new warmth and a new beginning, his bread soaked in coffee, the salt left on his skin by the sea, his peace, and a child that is soon to be born. He wishes he could give her a new car and have her be always fashionable in Paris and New York but he cannot afford even the Christian Dior purse that he owes her.
The song highlights how love isn’t about material possessions but the feelings and emotions they elicit. It is about giving everything one has, no matter how little it might be, to make the person they love happy.
