Žebrák
Vjetef Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

A když měl hlad, tak šel jídlo hledat, no prostě jinej, život měl rád.

Overall Meaning

The song "Žebrák" by Vjetef is a poignant portrayal of a homeless man's life. The lyrics describe how he lived in a canal and enjoyed it there because he could sleep whenever he wanted to. When he was hungry, he would go out and look for food, and simply had a different and unique perspective on life. The singer of the song is someone who was seen by the singer and cherished – although he was oftentimes disingenuous in his intentions. He played mind games, but he still loved life, even when the cards weren't dealt his way – it was as if he was taking from life itself, rather than giving back.

As time passed, and the days quickly changed into years, the homeless man transformed from a beggar to a madman, as life's pressure weighed too heavily on him. He wasn't found where he once stood, but instead, all that remained was a streetlamp – a haunting and eerie symbol of his absence. In the end, the singer was discovered, standing in the street, with a bottle of rum, his favorite drink, in his hand. The sorrowful ending provides the listener with the impression that the homeless man's life was not easy, nor as simple as it was thought to be.
