Concert tours throughout Europe have gained the group considerable attention on the continent, while back at home they made their debut at the prestigious Wigmore Hall in September of last year. They have recently performed with the Philharmonia Orchestra at the Royal Festival Hall, and will embark on a US tour in March 2009.
Their love of music extends beyond the stage and into the classroom. Forming a key part of an education programme, the group works in over 90 schools teaching young Britain to sing.
The group already has two successful CD’s under their belt: ‘From Gibbons to Gershwin’, an eclectic mix of music from the last 500 years; and ‘Snowed In’, a light-hearted mix of traditional Christmas carols. Now, with Evensong, VOCES8 offers what may be the strangest Christmas offering of the year, but with its catchy melody and powerful lyric, surely the most compelling.
The Road Home

That I left, that I lost,
So long ago?
All these years I have wandered,
Oh, when will I know
There's a way, there's a road
That will lead me home?
After wind, after rain,
When the dark is done.
As I wake from a dream
In the gold of day,
Through the air there's a calling
From far away,
There's a voice I can hear
That will lead me home.
Rise up, follow me,
Come away, is the call
With the love in your heart
As the only song
There is no such beauty
As where you belong:
Rise up, follow me,
I will lead you home.
The song, The Road Home, by Voces8 expresses feelings of longing and wandering as the singer searches for a place to call home. The lyrics suggest that the singer has lost their way and is searching for a way back to where they belong. The first stanza opens with the singer questioning the location of the road that they once knew. They wonder where they belong and where they have wandered for so long. They express hope and uncertainty about finding a way back home after spending so much time searching.
The second stanza reflects a sense of hopefulness as the singer wakes up from a dream with the sun shining down on them. They hear a voice calling out from far away which instills a sense of comfort and direction. The third stanza talks about a call to follow the voice with love in one's heart as it is the only song worth following. The last line of the song conveys the message that where one belongs is the most beautiful place and the only place where they can truly feel at home.
Overall, the lyrics of "The Road Home" convey a sense of searching and longing for a place to belong. Yet, it offers a glimmer of hope as the singer hears a voice that will guide them home. The message seems to be that those who wander will eventually find their way back home.
