How Far I'll Go
Voctave Lyrics

'Long as I can remember, never really knowing why
I wish I could be the perfect daughter
But I come back to the water, no matter how hard I try
Every turn I take, every trail I track
Every path I make, every road leads back
To the place I know, where I cannot go
See the line where the sky meets the sea? It calls me
And no one knows, how far it goes
If the wind in my sail on the sea stays behind me
One day I′ll know, if I go there's just no telling how far I'll go
Oh oh oh, oh, oh oh oh oh, oh oh oh, oh oh
Oh oh oh, oh, oh oh oh oh, oh oh oh, oh oh
I know, everybody on this island seems so happy on this island
Everything is by design
I know, everybody on this island has a role on this island
So maybe I can roll with mine
I can lead with pride, I can make us strong
I′ll be satisfied if I play along
But the voice inside sings a different song
What is wrong with me?
See the light as it shines on the sea? It′s blinding
But no one knows, how deep it goes
And it seems like it's calling out to me, so come find me
And let me know, what′s beyond that line, will I cross that line?
See the line where the sky meets the sea? It calls me
And no one knows, how far it goes
If the wind in my sail on the sea stays behind me
One day I'll know, how far I′ll go
The first verse of Voctave's "How Far I'll Go" ponders the link between the deep ocean and identity. The singer describes staring into the water for as long as they can remember without knowing why. They express their desire to be the perfect daughter and please those around them but feel a pull back to the water no matter how hard they try to resist. Regardless of the path they follow or the roads they take, they always end up back at the same place, where they cannot go but long to be.
In the second verse, the singer recognizes the limited choices they have growing up on the island. However, they vow to take ownership of their life and lead with pride to make themselves and their community stronger. Even as they try to take on this sense of duty, they can hear a voice inside singing a different song, questioning what is wrong with them. The chorus repeats, with the singer feeling the call of the ocean, wondering how far it goes and what lies beyond the line where sky meets sea. They leave it to chance, knowing that one day they will find out how far they'll go.
