Look at Me
Voice Of The Beehive Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

He says "I am not romantic come give me a kiss".
She says "I'm the silent type. Come over here sit in this,
I say that I am lost and you're a road to follow.
I say we're all inside ourselves so often these days,
And somehow we think we're the next best thing to heaven.
All so busy with our failures and all our glories.
Everybody's saying "Look at me! Look at me!"
Everybody's certain they've got something on one
Else can see. Tears are falling, causes are
Calling but everybody's saying "Yea, I know but look at me".
Psycho eyes and monster thighs, she preaches to for
The TV "Just give me some money and I swear I'll save
Your soul. It's easy. You can read the good book
To feel bad about yourself. Just one small donation
Could save you from burning down in hell. High and mighty yea!
Can't save the ocean but we sure can save a dime.
We may all look good but I think we're running out of time.
If we looked around as much as we look at ourselves.
Stop listening to gossip and start listening to cries for help.
Everybody's saying "Look at me ! Look at me !" Everybody's
Certain they've got something no one else can see.

The earth is drying. Planets are dying. Everybody's saying,
"Yea, I know but look at me !"

Overall Meaning

In "Look at Me" by Voice of the Beehive, the lyrics portray a cynical and critical tone towards society's obsession with self-importance and lack of empathy towards others. The opening lines depict a conversation between two people, one who is not romantic and the other who is silent. These characters are representative of the two extremes in society; those who are too guarded or those too willing to demand attention. As the song progresses, the lyrics describe how everyone is so consumed with their own problems and achievements that they aren't paying attention to what is happening to the world around them. This self-centered mentality is captured with the refrain, "Look at me! Look at me!" which is repeated frequently throughout the song.

The following verse takes aim at religious charlatans who exploit people's insecurities and fears for financial gain. The singer describes a televangelist who claims to have the solution to people's problems by using the Bible to guilt-trip them into donating money. The lyrics mock the idea that someone can buy their way into heaven and the hypocrisy of those who preach about saving souls but contribute to environmental destruction. The song ends with a call to action, imploring listeners to stop focusing on themselves and start paying attention to the world around them. The earth is in danger, and everyone is saying they know about it, yet no one is doing anything about it.
