When the sisters first sang together they called themselves the Beehive Girls, because of their beehive hairstyles. Their initial success came with the 1988 album Let It Bee, on which they recruited former members from ska band Madness to play guitar and drums. The album was popular on college radio stations, and the success was largely due to their brightly-coloured image and shout-along songs that was an antidote to the doom and gloom college rock scene. Their biggest commercial success came in the early 1990s with the single, Monsters and Angels from the album, Honey Lingers. In 1994 the other members left the band. The sisters decided to continue, recording the album Sex & Misery. The album did not sell well in the UK, and early success in the USA for the single Scary Kisses was poorly capitalised on. In late 1996 their record company refused to extend their contract, and the girls disappeared from the music industry, although they re-formed to play three live dates with The Wonder Stuff in 2003.

I like it that way but then again, maybe.
I'm nobody's valentine & I'm nobody's pearl
When you get right down to it I always seem to always find just
Some girl singin'
There are monsters, there are angels.
There's sugar & there is salt
There's ice and there is fire.
In every single heart, there are monsters, there are angels.
I'm nobody's promise and I'm nobody's chore
And I ain't got nobody that I feel I gotta
Live for - nobody to live for.
I'm nobody's work & I'm nobodys' company
And every time I turn around I always seem to find
Just me singin'
There are monsters, there are angels.
There's a peacefulness and a rage inside us all.
There's sugar, and there's salt.
There's ice and there's fire
In every single heart there are monsters there are angels.
I'm nobodys' wife, I'm nobodys' baby,
I like it that way, but then again, maybe.
Then again maybe.
I'm nobody's valentine and I'm nobody's pearl.
When you get right down to it I always seem to find just
Some girl.
Singin' there are monsters, there are angels.
There's a peacefulness and a rage inside us all.
There's sugar, and there's salt.
There's ice and there's fire.
In every single heart there are monsters there are angels.
Singin' there are monsters, there are angels.
Singin' there are monsters, there are angels.
I'm nobody's wife, and I'm nobody's baby.

The lyrics to Voice Of The Beehive's song Monsters and Angels depict a sense of independence and a desire for individualism. The singer emphasizes that she is not tied down by any societal roles or expectations, such as being a wife or a baby. She enjoys this freedom, but also questions whether it is truly the right choice for her. She is not a valentine nor a pearl, indicating that she is not the typical idea of femininity, but rather a free spirit who finds solace in singing about the monsters and angels that exist within us all.
The chorus of the song highlights the duality within every person - the monsters symbolizing the dark and negative aspects, while the angels represent the light and positive ones. The line "there's a peacefulness and a rage inside us all" suggests that these opposing forces are constantly battling within us. The use of contrasting imagery throughout the song, such as sugar and salt, ice and fire, emphasizes this duality and the complexity of human nature.
Overall, Monsters and Angels is a song about embracing one's individualism while recognizing the different aspects of our personalities, both good and bad.

I think they were fantastic. However, they were NOT mainstream. They were very offbeat. For me, they had tremendous success on my personal charts. "Monsters and Angels" only peaked at number 8 on the Modern Rock Charts back in the day. Even with the right audience, they were only so popular.

This was on BBC 4 Top of the Pops last year, from 1992, 30 years later it's still better than anything currently in the charts.
