01. Early 80's hardcore punk band closely linked to the Washington D.C. scene but actually hailing from nearby Columbia, Maryland. Often credited as one of the first bands to successfully fuse hardcore and heavy metal, this was mostly due to guitarist Bubba Dupree's unique playing style that somehow managed to merge the reckless abandonment of punk with the technical riffing of metal. Mostly ignored at the time, they did manage to gather a small cult following through their chaotic live shows that often ended in drunken mayhem perfectly mirroring their highly volatile music. Their recorded legacy consists of just fifteen tracks, three on the legendary Flex Your Head compilation of early D.C. hardcore and twelve more on a split album with The Faith, both released on seminal hardcore label Dischord. There is also an unauthorized CD of their early demos available. They also recorded an album for Touch And Go records which remains unreleased called Potion For Bad Dreams.

Authority
Void Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Burned body torn and beat
They are just victims
Of authority
No more authority
No more authority
Why should they push me
All their lust and greed
Proves their insanity
No more authority
No more authority
No more authority
No more authority
One day I'll be old
Then I'll have authority
I'll wish I was young
And I will envy
No more authority
No more authority
The song "Authority" by Void is a critique of the abuse of power and corruption by those in authority. The song's opening lines describe images of chaos and violence in the streets, with bodies burning and being torn apart. However, the lyrics state that these people are not to be blamed, but rather they are "just victims of authority." The singer then declares his lack of respect for authority, criticizing their greed and lust for power, which he claims proves their insanity. The repeated refrain of "No more authority" emphasizes the singer's rejection of those in power and their abuse of it.
The final verse of the song is interesting in its ironic tone, as the singer acknowledges the inevitability of aging and gaining authority themselves. Here, the song takes on a more introspective tone, with the singer wishing to hold onto their youthful rebellion against authority. The final repetition of "No more authority" feels more melancholic and resigned, suggesting a kind of weariness or disillusionment with the ever-present corruption of those in power.
