01. Early 80's hardcore punk band closely linked to the Washington D.C. scene but actually hailing from nearby Columbia, Maryland. Often credited as one of the first bands to successfully fuse hardcore and heavy metal, this was mostly due to guitarist Bubba Dupree's unique playing style that somehow managed to merge the reckless abandonment of punk with the technical riffing of metal. Mostly ignored at the time, they did manage to gather a small cult following through their chaotic live shows that often ended in drunken mayhem perfectly mirroring their highly volatile music. Their recorded legacy consists of just fifteen tracks, three on the legendary Flex Your Head compilation of early D.C. hardcore and twelve more on a split album with The Faith, both released on seminal hardcore label Dischord. There is also an unauthorized CD of their early demos available. They also recorded an album for Touch And Go records which remains unreleased called Potion For Bad Dreams.

Void Lyrics

Nihilistic epistemology is
death to the thinker’s claim that
it’s possible to know if
something is fact or fiction
According to The Structure
we can make complex models
to describe reality
However, there’s a problem
as we can never prove that
the knowledge made from models
links to reality
Outside the periphery, never reality
Outside the periphery, never reality
If knowledge does exist, just
outside our human logic
the universe can go fuck itself
and existence too!
The lyrics of Void’s song “Explode” talks about nihilistic epistemology, which is essentially the belief that knowledge is impossible, and even if it exists, it is beyond human understanding. The line “It’s all slipping away” embodies the feelings of despair and hopelessness that often comes with nihilistic ideologies.
The song references “The Structure of Scientific Revolutions,” a book by Thomas Kuhn that critiques the traditional view of science as a linear progression of knowledge. Instead, Kuhn argues that science undergoes paradigm shifts, where old knowledge is discarded as new knowledge is discovered. The lyric “we can make complex models to describe reality, however, there’s a problem as we can never prove that the knowledge made from models links to reality” highlights the limitations of knowledge acquisition.
The chorus of the song “Outside the periphery, never reality” implies that reality is always beyond our grasp. The phrase “Outside the periphery” refers to the limits of our knowledge, and how we can never fully understand anything that lies beyond it. The final lines of the song, “If knowledge does exist, just outside our human logic, the universe can go fuck itself and existence too” ultimately expresses a sense of disillusionment and rejection of the idea of knowledge altogether.
