01. Early 80's hardcore punk band closely linked to the Washington D.C. scene but actually hailing from nearby Columbia, Maryland. Often credited as one of the first bands to successfully fuse hardcore and heavy metal, this was mostly due to guitarist Bubba Dupree's unique playing style that somehow managed to merge the reckless abandonment of punk with the technical riffing of metal. Mostly ignored at the time, they did manage to gather a small cult following through their chaotic live shows that often ended in drunken mayhem perfectly mirroring their highly volatile music. Their recorded legacy consists of just fifteen tracks, three on the legendary Flex Your Head compilation of early D.C. hardcore and twelve more on a split album with The Faith, both released on seminal hardcore label Dischord. There is also an unauthorized CD of their early demos available. They also recorded an album for Touch And Go records which remains unreleased called Potion For Bad Dreams.

War Hero
Void Lyrics

Give me grenades and let me go soon
Don't wanta be a civilian anymore
Already got my boots
Fuck discipline, I just want to kill
I'm not worried about being drafted
All my friends say they are going to run and hide
I want to fight because I want to die
I want to die in a war
The lyrics to Void's song "War Hero" depict a young person who is tired of civilian life and craves the excitement and violence of war. They are eager to join the military and be given a gun and grenades so they can kill. They are not concerned about discipline, only about their desire to fight and potentially die in a war. Despite the fear and apprehension felt by their friends about being drafted, the singer of the song sees it as an opportunity to fulfill their death wish.
The message of the song can be interpreted in a few different ways. One could argue that it is a critique of a society that glorifies war and soldiers as heroes, even though the reality is often much more brutal and complicated. The singer's desire for death suggests a disillusionment with life and a desire to escape, possibly due to trauma or mental illness. Additionally, the song can be read as a commentary on the intersection of masculinity and violence, as the singer feels the need to prove their toughness through warfare.
