Stranger Than Fiction
Votum Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
- Stranger than fiction
The road ... it winds snakelike
The wish to shed the spying headlights
The plot needs a solid twist now
I say that you burn
The cause-and-effect rule
Is it the relentless code of fiction
That made her steer off the clear track?
Blurred out of view and faded ...
It never stops haunting -
You're here
And the next thing I know
You're gone,
Just as I wrote it.
These words -
They have bodies and faces
They live.
Fact or print - you are bound with me,
Now and then you're entwined in me
Be it fate or plot - you are tied with me,
Here and there you're confined in me
It never stops haunting -
You're here
And the next thing I know
You're gone,
Just as I wrote it
These words -
They have bodies and faces
They die
In Votum's song "Stranger Than Fiction," the lyrics offer a glimpse into the complex and unpredictable nature of life. The opening line "Let's start with the ridiculous and then move backwards" indicates that the song is exploring events that seem illogical or impossible to comprehend. The following lines paint a picture of a journey on a winding road, symbolizing the struggles and challenges that we face on our path through life. The wish to shed the spying headlights may suggest a desire to escape the watchful eye of society, to break free of conformity and expectation.
As the song progresses, the lyrics question the nature of cause and effect and whether fate or fiction can control our lives. The line "Is it the relentless code of fiction that made her steer off the clear track?" prompts contemplation of whether the choices we make are predetermined by outside forces or the product of our own free will. The final lines "These words - they have bodies and faces, they die" acknowledge that the experiences we have, and the emotions we feel, are real and tangible, even if they are ultimately fleeting.
