The band members attended University of Michigan's music school. They first came together as a rhythm section for a performance at the Duderstadt Center, a university facility that houses an arts library and other resources. After reading an interview with German producer Reinhold Mack, band founder Jack Stratton conceived of Vulfpeck as an imagined German version of the U.S. session musicians of the 1960s such as the Funk Brothers, the Wrecking Crew, and Muscle Shoals. The idea was to channel that era of the live rhythm section.
The band's founding members are Jack Stratton on keyboards, drums and guitar, Theo Katzman on guitar, drums and vocals, Woody Goss on keyboards, and Joe Dart on bass. Touring partners and frequent collaborators include Antwaun Stanley, Joey Dosik and Cory Wong. Other contributing musicians include Charles Jones, Christine Hucal, David T. Walker, Bernard Purdie, James Gadson and Blake Mills.

The opening line "Mom said, 'Wait for the moment!'" sets up the whole narrative of the song. The singer has gone home for the night while others are still outside, but he’s not alone in bed because he feels "timeless" when he sleeps. He falls asleep waiting for a brighter day. The next day, he plans on playing football with only his closest friends. The singer infers that the girl he likes, Sharon will not be there, but he plans on playing it cool which he equates with being 'uninterested'. He reflects on how it's hard to make a point when living so loudly and tells himself to turn it down. The singer appears to be quite self-aware despite his youth.
In the bridge of the song, the singer tries to convince his friend that not being invited is an opportunity, but also seems to have some doubts around his own words. Suddenly, he receives a butt-dialed call from Sharon. He smiles and listens to her breathing, admiringly reflecting that he’s good at stuff, as is she, and hence they could make 'products' together. The singer reveals that he’s "attuned to the grooves that turn her off" implying that he knows her preferences quite well before the song ends in some nonsensical chanting.
