Just Like Christmas
W.A.T.L.P Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Taime is a rock star
Just like me
Everyone loves him
Just like me
They all think he's punk
Just like me
Smack how he picks it up
So where's your dignity?

Faster, faster, faster

Well Axl is a love god
Just like me
The girls all love him
Just like me
But he's so messed up
Just like me
Doesn't want to give it up
So where's your dignity?

Guns and, guns and, guns and
Guns and, guns and, guns and

Well Vixen are love gods
Just like me
Pretty pretty sex things
Just like me
Dressed up and to pay to play
I couldn't live that way
Hair spray and bustier
Can't fool me

Vixen, Vixen, Vixen
Vixen, Vixen, Vixen

Slash is a love god
I know it's hard to believe
Boys all dig him
But boys are easy to please
You've got the bimbos swinging
Like monkeys in the trees

You've got limos and money
So where's your dignity?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of W.A.T.L.P's song Just Like Christmas appear to be a commentary on the world of rock music and its often superficial obsession with fame, image and persona. The song's opening lines identify Taime as a rock star, just like the singer, and highlights the fact that everybody loves him, including the singer, but questions where the dignity lies for someone who has to resort to drugs and other excesses to maintain his public image. The same sentiment is expressed towards Axl, another rock star who's considered a love god by the girls but is so messed up that he refuses to give up his lifestyle. In both instances, the singer seems to empathize with their struggles but also recognizes the trade-offs they've made in order to maintain their status.

Similarly, when the song turns its attention to Vixen, another set of love gods, the lyrics critique the objectification and commodification of women in the music industry who are reduced to "pretty pretty sex things" dressed up in a "bustier" and "hairspray". The singer identifies with Vixen but also distances herself from them, acknowledging that she couldn't live the way they do. The section about Slash also criticizes the way in which some rock stars are able to manipulate and exploit their fan base while enjoying the fruits of success such as limos and money. The song seems to suggest that the rock star lifestyle may be alluring on the surface, but it ultimately comes at a cost to one's dignity and self-respect.
