Hello Walls
W. Nelson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hello walls, (hello) (hello)
How'd things go for you today?
Don't you miss her
Since she up and walked away?
And I'll bet you dread to spend
Another lonely night with me
But lonely walls, I'll keep you company
Hello window (hello) (hello)
Well I see that you're still here
Aren't you lonely
Since our darlin' disappeared?
Well, look here, is that a teardrop
In the corner of your pane?
Now don't you try to tell me that it's rain

She went away and left us all alone
The way she planned
Guess we'll have to learn to get along
Without her if we can

Hello ceiling, (hello) (hello)
I'm gonna stare at you awhile
You know I can't sleep
So won't you bear with me awhile?

We gotta all stick together or else
I'll lose my mind

I've got a feelin', she'll be gone a long, long time
(Hello, hello)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Willie Nelson's song "Hello Walls" are a conversation between the singer and his surroundings. The singer is addressing the walls, the window, and the ceiling, acknowledging their presence and imagining their thoughts and feelings. The walls are described as lonely, and the singer admits that the walls probably dread spending another lonely night with him, reflecting his own loneliness and emotional state. Similarly, the window is described as lonely since the departure of a loved one, and the singer notices what he assumes is a tear in the corner of the pane, revealing both his own sensitivity and his tendency to personify inanimate objects.

The singer seems resigned to the fact that the woman who left him is not coming back, and he and his surroundings will have to adjust to life without her. He tells the walls they'll have to learn to get along without her if they can, suggesting his own struggle to come to terms with the loss. The singer's inability to sleep suggests the depth of his grief, and his call to "all stick together" reveals his hope that his surroundings can somehow provide comfort and support. The phrase "hello hello" repeated throughout the song serves to emphasize the loneliness of the singer, who longs for human connection but is forced to address his surroundings instead.

@Memento Memes No I'm serious.

After hearing a verse about a guy so lonely and lovesick that he is talking to his walls, what would you expect to hear next?

Consider all the other things Willie might have written -- More about walls, walls closing in etc.; more about how cruel his woman was to leave him; how his life is blank like a wall, etc.

Instead, he abandons walls altogether and goes on to the other stuff in his house. Pretty much the last thing I expected to hear.

Once you've heard the song, it seems quite natural to picture a guy who is reminded of his vanished woman by every thing in his house. Once you've heard the song, you can imagine him thinking "Hello, commode" when he goes to take a dump, or "Hello driveway" when he goes out to get in his truck.

But if you hadn't heard the song yet, would you have thought of it? Me, neither. That's what I define as clever genius.
