Touch Me
W. Nelson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Touch me
Touch the hand of a man
Who once owned all the world

And touch me
Touch the arms That once held all the charms
Of the world's sweetest girl
Touch me
Maybe someday you may Need to know
How it feels when you lose

So touch me
And you will know how you'd feel
With the blues

Watch me
Watch the eyes that have seen
All the heartache and pain in the land

And be thankful
That you're happy though standing so close
To the world's bluest man

Don't forget me
Take a good look at someone who's lost
Everything he can lose

And then touch me
And you'll know how you'd feel with the blues

Don't forget me
Take a good look at someone who's lost
Everything he can lose

Then touch me
And you'll know how you'd feel with the blues

Overall Meaning

In Willie Nelson's "Touch Me," the nostalgic lyrics describe the yearning for a lost love and the pain of loneliness. The first verse is about the power the man used to have when he owned everything in the world, but now he is alone and seeking comfort. The second verse describes how the man wants to be seen, acknowledged, and comforted by a woman. He tells her to watch his eyes that have seen all the pain in the world, and to be thankful that she is not as blue as he is.

The chorus 'touch me, and you'll know how you'd feel with the blues' is a plea for the woman to empathize with the singer's loneliness and to recognize the emptiness he feels. The song seems to be an appeal to the listener to recognize that life can be hard and that we all might experience a time of great sorrow where one would need the solace of someone's touch.

The lyrics show Willie Nelson's mastery of words, making it possible to write a song that is both melancholic and passionate at once. With lines like "Touch me, Maybe someday you may need to know," the song is also a testament to the power of human connection and empathy. In "Touch Me," Willie Nelson has created yet another timeless classic that continues to resonate with music lovers.

Some interesting facts about "Touch Me" include that it was released in 1962 and was one of Willie Nelson's earlier hits. It was his fourth single and was released under Liberty Records. It hit number 7 on the charts and spent 17 weeks on the billboard charts. Its commercial success paved the way for Nelson's country music stardom. The song has been covered by several artists, including Ray Price, Johnny Rodriguez, and George Jones, to name a few. In 1985, it was featured in the film “The Color Purple." The song has been a staple of Nelson's live performances and remains a fan favorite.

I love this song - Willie sure can sign a great love song. His unique voice makes any song he sings unforgettable. What a song writer - all of those he's written are ones that I play often - the songs are so good that no matter who sings them (except for Willie of course who makes them sound fabulous) they sound terrific. Thanks so much for posting this treasure. - Paula

Love the sound of this record. Such a contrast to the heavily overdubbed "Nashville Sound" records that were popular back then. It's kind of hard to believe that this would be Willie's last top ten hit until "Red Headed Stranger" came out in 1974 & he really found his niche.

Glen McGregor

The birth of magic. That's what Willie's music has been all of these years.

Hank Cochran wrote this song. I not only like singers, I admire the people who can put the music and words together. Now that's an artist
