Gives You Hell
WSTR Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
With a big smile on my face
And it never feels out of place
And you're still probably working
At a nine to five pace
I wonder how bad that tastes
When you see my face hope it gives you hell
Hope it gives you hell
Hope it gives you hell
Now where's your picket fence love
And where's that shiny car
And did it ever get you far?
You never seemed so tense love
I've never seen you fall so hard
Do you know where you are?
And truth be told, I miss you
And truth be told, I'm lying
When you see my face hope it gives you hell
Hope it gives you hell when you walk my way
Hope it gives you hell
Hope it gives you hell
If you find a man that's worth
A damn that treats you well
Then he's a fool, you're just as well
Hope it gives you hell
Hope it gives you hell
Tomorrow you'll be thinking to yourself
Where'd it all go wrong?
But the list goes on and on
And truth be told, I miss you
And truth be told, I'm lying
When you see my face hope it gives you hell
Hope it gives you hell when you walk my way
Hope it gives you hell
Hope it gives you hell
When you find a man that's worth
A damn that treats you well
Then he's a fool, you're just as well
Hope it gives you hell
Now you'll never see
What you've done to me
You can take back your memories
They're no good to me
And here's all your lies
You can't look me in the eyes
With the sad, sad look that you wear so well
When you see my face hope it gives you hell
Hope it gives you hell when you walk my way
Hope it gives you hell
Hope it gives you hell
When you find a man that's worth
A damn that treats you well
Then he's a fool, you're just as well
Hope it gives you hell
When you see my face hope it gives you hell
Hope it gives you hell when you walk my way
Hope it gives you hell
Hope it gives you hell
When you hear this song and you
Sing along but you never tell
Then you're a fool, I'm just as well
Hope it gives you hell
When you hear this song
I hope that it will give you hell
You can sing along
I hope that it puts you through hell
The lyrics to WSTR's song "Gives You Hell" convey feelings of resentment and satisfaction toward an ex-lover who seemingly betrayed or mistreated the singer. The song begins with the line "I wake up every evening, with a big smile on my face," suggesting that the singer has moved on and is genuinely happy without their former partner. They take joy in this happiness, even questioning how unsatisfying it must be for their ex to still be stuck in a mundane nine-to-five job.
The chorus focuses on the impact the singer's presence has on their ex. They hope that seeing their face and encountering them will bring about feelings of frustration and regret. This could imply that the singer wants their ex to see how well they are doing and realize what they have lost.
The second verse continues to highlight the difference between the singer's present happiness and their ex's apparent dissatisfaction. They mention the absence of the stereotypical "picket fence love" and "shiny car" in their ex's life, questioning whether these material possessions actually brought them any fulfillment. The singer implies that their ex has fallen hard and seems lost, suggesting that they may have made poor choices or experienced hardships after their breakup. Additionally, the line "Do you know where you are?" could imply that the ex is struggling to find their own identity or purpose.
The bridge of the song opens with a moment of vulnerability, as the singer admits that they miss their ex, even if they claim to be lying. This could represent the lingering emotions and conflict within the singer, recognizing that despite their current happiness, there are still unresolved feelings about the past.
Overall, "Gives You Hell" expresses a triumphant attitude toward an ex-lover's apparent troubles while also acknowledging the complexity of their own emotions. The lyrics suggest that the singer has moved on and is content in their new life, hoping that their ex will feel remorseful for their actions and realize the mistake they made in losing the singer.

I wake up every evening
I am always feeling happy and carefree
With a big smile on my face
My happiness is evident and genuine
And it never feels out of place
My happiness is constant and never feels unnatural
And you're still probably working
While I'm enjoying life, you're still stuck in a mundane job
At a nine to five pace
You have the typical monotonous work schedule
I wonder how bad that tastes
I find satisfaction in knowing that your life isn't as fulfilling as mine
Now where's your picket fence love
Where is the perfect, suburban life you used to desire?
And where's that shiny car
What happened to the material possessions you once coveted?
And did it ever get you far?
Did those things truly bring you happiness and success?
You never seemed so tense love
I've never seen you so stressed and anxious
I've never seen you fall so hard
Your life has taken a steep decline
Do you know where you are?
Have you lost sight of who you are and where you're headed?
And truth be told, I miss you
Despite everything, I still have lingering feelings for you
And truth be told, I'm lying
But I'm pretending not to care and lying about it
If you find a man that's worth
If you come across a man who is truly valuable
A damn that treats you well
Someone who treats you with respect and kindness
Then he's a fool, you're just as well
If you choose him, you're making the same mistakes as before
Tomorrow you'll be thinking to yourself
In the future, you'll reflect on your choices and regrets
Where'd it all go wrong?
You'll question how everything ended up so badly
But the list goes on and on
There are countless reasons why things fell apart
Now you'll never see
You'll never truly understand
What you've done to me
The pain and heartache you caused me
You can take back your memories
You can have all the memories, they hold no value for me anymore
They're no good to me
Those memories don't bring me happiness or comfort
And here's all your lies
These are the lies you told me
You can't look me in the eyes
You can't face me with honesty and integrity
With the sad, sad look that you wear so well
Your facial expression perfectly captures your sorrow and regret
When you hear this song and you
When you listen to this song and
Sing along but you never tell
You can't admit that the lyrics resonate with you
Then you're a fool, I'm just as well
If you deny the truth, you're foolish just like me
I hope that it puts you through hell
I wish for this song to make you feel the pain you caused me
