Wale was born to Nigerian immigrant parents in Washington, DC. He grew up on Peabody Street in Northwest DC and moved to Largo, Maryland as a teenager. He attended seven different high schools in Washington, D.C. and Maryland, finally graduating from Quince Orchard High School in 2001. He went to Robert Morris College and Virginia State University on football scholarships, and then Bowie State University but dropped out in 2004 to pursue music full-time. Before music started paying the bills, Wale worked day jobs at Sprint, Up Against The Wall and Downtown Locker Room.
Wale emerged onto the local DC hip hop scene with the help of WKYS-FM's DJ Alizay. Wale began getting radio play in 2004 with a single called "Rhyme of the Century" which got Wale in the June 2005 "Unsigned Hype" section of Source magazine and his buzz started growing.

Wale Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Ask 'em what do they know?
Ask 'em can we go? Pretty girls
Sunshine in the air, perfume everywhere
Girls are everywhere
Thanks to the flow right now what up
A lime to a lemon remind you of the sky when I'm fuckin'
Admire your style and your physique
And I ain't trying to critique but you deserve a good drink, so whats up?
What you sippin' on? It's no problem
Black and gold models like i'm pro-New Orleans
But shawty I'm far from a saint but I got two A-mex's that look the same way
Wale, D.C. that's me huh, my Prada say Prada and they Prada say Fela
I ain't gotta tell ya they know about me huh
Come to D.C. and I can make you a believer
See baby I'm a leader they always from a Libra
And I ain't trying to lead you wrong sugar I need ya
So would you please listen to what I'm a need from you

Big black diamond bigger than a black razor

The song "Pretty Girls" by Wale features a rap-style refrain that repeats its hook: "Girls, I ask 'em do they smoke? / Ask 'em what do they know? / Ask 'em can we go? / Pretty girls / Sunshine in the air, perfume everywhere / Girls are everywhere." The song is essentially an ode to beautiful women, celebrating their presence and beauty. In the opening line of the song, Wale talks about smoking βthis may be a euphemism for different things- or asking if the girls smoke, which can be interpreted in different ways, but it does not seem to play a big role in the overall message of the song. The song has a smooth flowing beat that makes it a great feel-good tune. As Wale raps about admiring women's bodies and wanting to buy them nice things, the description of the vibe becomes vivid with the "sunshine in the air, perfume everywhere" line. The song is complemented by Gucci Mane's verse; he is simply lusting after a pretty girl and wants to impress her with his wealth, hinting that women love diamonds and designer bags.
