Iscariot
Walk The Moon Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Until now, I knew this of myself
That if you had thrown yourself down
Into the lion's den
My brother I'd follow you in
Perhaps I lack some foresight (should have known)
Brother you were so right
Sure as the setting sun
Can't trust just anyone

That's what you want, but it's not what you're asking for
I said that's what you're asking, but you're gonna get more than you bargained for
I said that's what you had, but you don't have it any more
You had it coming

I never imagined you dead (I never)
But tell me, are you even aware
That all that we did, you undo
Iscariot, you fool

That's what you want, but it's not what you're asking for
I said that's what you're asking, but you're gonna get more than you bargained for
I said that's what you had, but you don't have it any more
You had it coming

Oh you know you had it coming my friend, my friend
You know you had it coming my brother, oh my brother
Had it coming my friend, my friend
You know you had it coming my brother, oh my brother
Had it coming my friend, my friend
You know you had it coming my brother, oh my brother

Had it coming my friend, my friend
You had it coming.

Overall Meaning

The song "Iscariot" by Walk The Moon brings up the idea of loyalty and betrayal in relationships. The first verse seems to showcase the loyalty one person has towards their partner or friend, showing that they would follow them into the danger if they were thrown into a lion's den. However, the second verse flips the script and talks about undoing all that they did and the idea of the person being a fool or a traitor, referred to as Iscariot. The chorus repeats the line "You had it coming" multiple times, revealing that the betrayal was deserved or expected. It's almost as though the person who has been betrayed is saying that they knew it would happen eventually and the betrayer got what they deserved.

In terms of the title of the song, it's possible that the reference to the name Iscariot is an allusion to Judas Iscariot, the apostle who betrayed Jesus. This fits with the themes of betrayal present in the song. Although it's never explicitly stated who the song is addressed to or what the betrayal is about, it's clear that there is a significant issue between the two people. The use of "my friend" and "my brother" shows that there was a deep connection between them, adding to the emotional impact of the lyrics.

At the risk of being incredibly superficial and bypassing the absolute perfection of Walk the Moon...That man right there is beautiful.

Wow. I'm watching this man lip sing into the camera in a badly lit airport yet it's one of the more powerful experiances I've had musically. The melody combined with his intensity create something you could drown in.

***** Yeah, she's exaggerating a bit. However, the song is a bit personal for some, especially considering the subject matter. I think that may be where people are getting the "powerful" adjective from.

@97javic

It's powerful. There's no other word for it. She's right

He's on mine, I think he's attempting to "troll" but he's not doing a very good job.
