One Foot
Walk the Moon Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Not a soul up ahead and nothing behind
There's a desert in my blood and a storm in your eyes
Am I the king of nothing at all?
Then you're the queen of nothing at all
Well I remember the fight and I forget the pain
I got my hand in your pocket and my key on your chain
Am I the king of nothing at all?
Then you're the queen of nothing at all

Oh, through the wilderness
You and I we're walking through the emptiness
Oh, my heart is a mess
Is it the only defense against the wilderness?

Cross my heart and hope to die
Taking this one step at a time
Got your back if you got mine
One foot in front of the other
One foot in front of the other
One foot in front of the other

One foot in front of the other
All that we have is each other
One foot in front of the other

Not a soul on the road, not a star in the sky
It's a desert in my heart, and I know where to hide
I'm your king of nothing at all
And you're my queen of nothing at all
Well, out here in the dust if you don't have trust
Ain't nothing left of us, this is the exodus
They're just testing us, they can't flex with us
They can't mess with us, they can't mess with us

Oh, through the wilderness
How come even together there can be loneliness?
Oh, our heart's a mess
But it's our only defense to brave the wilderness

Cross my heart and hope to die
Taking this one step at a time
I got your back if you got mine
One foot in front of the other
One foot in front of the other
One foot in front of the other

(Wilderness)
One foot in front of the other
All that we have is each other
One foot in front of the other

(Well, out here in the dust)
Oh, through the wilderness
How come even together there can be loneliness?
Oh, our heart's a mess
But it's our only defense to brave the wilderness

Cross my heart and hope to die
Taking this one step at a time
I got your back if you got mine
One foot in front of the other
One foot in front of the other
One foot in front of the other

(Wilderness)
One foot in front of the other
Oh, all that we have is each other
One foot in front of the other

In the so-called Land of the Free
One foot in front of the other

Don't you know that all we have is each other
One foot in front of the other

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "One Foot" by Walk the Moon, speak of the journey that the singer and their partner are making through life. With a desert in the singer's blood and a storm in their partner's eyes, the two walk through the wilderness together. The lyrics echo the challenges that can present in a journey, particularly when toiling through tough times where progress it unclear, yet simultaneously encourages the perseverance of those brave enough to keep moving forward together.

The first half of the song speaks of the King and Queen of nothing at all, with the singer questioning if they have what it takes to lead. The chorus finds the singer and their partner alone and walking through the wilderness. There is a sense of the unknown, but they have each other and are taking it one step at a time.

The second half of the song finds them alone, with the lyrics showing doubt creeping in. The singer declares themselves the King of Nothing and takes solace in their partner being the Queen of Nothing. This puts them on equal playing fields while also illustrating the singer's vulnerability within. They use their mutual trust as the shield for facing the challenging road ahead, finding reassurance in their togetherness. The chorus repeats with the additional line highlighting what they have, as it is the heart of the survival for them, each other.

I hope that people can hear these guys as more than just "Shut Up and Dance". Such incredible artists!

Peel Slowly and See

Gavin Bonar they probably won't. Shut up and Dance is very recognizable, Anna Sun is a masterpiece, this isn't original. Listen very closely to this song and tell me if you've heard this sound before, doesn't take long right? That's because literally everyone in fucking 2017 is using the same generic beats, the same overproduced sound, and painful painfully bland melodies, it would be a miracle if anyone recognizes this as a walk the moon song

Sweet6T9

True dat! Shut up and dance got me into them, but they're definitely more than that! I love every song! Walk The Moon is my favorite band!

Your Friendly Neighborhood Smark

Gavin Bonar I remember seeing shut up and dance on the iTunes single of the week about a month before it got popular so I have a pass. I also like their work from their first album like type rope
