Portugal
Walk the Moon Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I know everyone you know
You know everyone I know
A venn diagram is one circle

You grow up when you're not looking
We grow up but without knowing
And all of a sudden I'm leaving
So I say I'm sorry I can't, I've got plans
'Cause I watched the time slip through my hands

But you don't know now
One day you'll learn
Growing up is a heavy leaf to turn
A heavy leaf to turn

Take me with you
Cus even on your own
You are not alone

Take me with you
'Cause even by yourself, my love
You are something else

One summer turns into ten summers
One lover turns into ten lovers
But this memory is still with me

Circles bring me in circles
Your clothes underneath my clothes
Once upon a time in Portugal

So I say I'm sorry I can't, I've got plans
'Cause I watched the time slip through my hands

But you don't know now
One day you'll learn
But growing up is a heavy leaf to turn
A heavy leaf to turn

Take me with you
'Cause even on your own
You are not alone

Take me with you
'Cause even by yourself, my love
You are something else

No matter what you want
Somebody else wants it just as bad
No matter what you got
Somebody else has got it worse
No matter when I got to you
Somebody else got to you first

So I say I'm sorry I can't, I've got plans
'Cause I watched the time slip through my hands

But you don't know now
One day you'll learn
That growing up is a heavy leaf to turn
A heavy leaf to turn

Take me with you
'Cause even on your own
You are not alone

Take me with you
'Cause even by yourself, my love
You are something else

Take me with you
'Cause even on your own (you are alone)
You are not alone

Take me with you

'Cause even by yourself
You carry with you anyone else

Overall Meaning

The song "Portugal" by Walk the Moon is a nostalgic reflection on growing up and the changes that come with it. The lyrics begin with the idea that the people we meet in life are interconnected, as evidenced in the lyrics "I know everyone you know, you know everyone I know, a venn diagram is one circle." The song then delves into the idea that we grow up without realizing we are doing so, and suddenly we find ourselves leaving and moving on. The chorus repeats the phrase "Take me with you" in a plea for connection and companionship during the journey of growing up.

The second verse speaks of the passing of time and how memories can stay with us even as life changes around us. The mention of Portugal suggests a place of significance and importance in the singer's life. The bridge of the song touches on the idea that everyone wants what someone else has, and no matter what we have achieved, someone else may have had it worse or already done it before us.

Through the repeated plea to be taken along on the journey, "Portugal" becomes a nostalgic reflection on growing up, as well as a commentary on the universal experience of longing for companionship and understanding during times of change.

It's so uncanny how my last girlfriend and I called this our song for a period of time, completely oblivious to the lyrics talking about growing apart but still wishing well for the other person.
After a nasty break up and a lengthy reconciliation it turned out to be a pretty damn good song for us.

This song reminds me a lot of 2016 when I first moved to Walk The Moon's hometown of Cincinnati for college. What an incredible summer that was, and how this song reminds me a lot of that European feel where I can only think of soccer with it for some reason. Maybe because it sounds like a FIFA song haha. Miss those days of being young, not caring for the future and just great times and memories. Summer 2016 in Ohio will never be topped.

This song got me thru pretty rough times when I had drama with some friends of mine. Back then, I hadn’t known this song was about people drifting apart. It describes exactly what happened to me but despite all that this song helped me to pull thru regardless. Thanks Walk The Moon.
