@simonsmatthew Mariah was lucky they gave her full songwriting credits because most singers who have written only lyrics and vocal arrangements were not given full writing credits back then. Aretha arranged most of her songs centered around her piano playing and even she didn't get proper producer credits until much later on. I think the idea of Mariah being a songwriter was a ploy to market her against Whitney Houston who wasn't writing any of her material.

@simonsmatthew You doubt that Mariah co-wrote the music? You can doubt all you want, but she did. The problem I have with your "I don't know why Carey can't be satisfied with just being a great singer/performer" comment is the fact that she is more than that. Yes, I agree that being a great singer/performer is a great skill in itself, but you are talking about someone (Mariah Carey) who has been lied on, and in order to have a genuinely honest conversation about this, you need to at least appreciate that top lining is real. Walter isn't broke, so I highly doubt it's the money, it's more on the lines of jealousy. I appreciate Walter's gift as a producer, he just isn't gifted in the lying department.

@Jade Matthews I doubt that. Ever gone through some of those songs on the piano and looked at the actual score? I have no doubt Carey wrote the lyrics, but the music where it counts (especially the chord progressions) must have been Afanasieff - or someone uncredited. You find augmented sixths and all sorts of things resolving flawlessly. This is almost certainly from someone who has studied classical or formal composition to quite a high level. I don't know why Carey can't be satisfied with just being a great singer/performer. That is a great skill in itself. Just as important as being a composer or lyricist. Does she want to be a dentist as well? Perhaps it's the money?

No doubt Walter.E's one of the G.O.AT. love how accurately Walter did when addressing Mariah,. My few probs with this vid are the unbefitting title. More like its abt MC/the MB album and the AIWFCIY song than abt Walter . Not sure the intentions of title & how he literally dodged Celine's name when mentioning MHWGO. Just cant when the man says 'vision of '''' ' and '''...the man that ' crafted so many great songs Mariah. Maybe there's ingrained misogyny or some sorts imo. Idk, just saying .

On this point, I would like to add that lyrics and music are not two distinct entities. The person who writes the lyrics is the one who actually comes up with the melody, over which he/she writes the lyrics. If he's a pianist/sheet music reader, he'll then make the final song on his own on the piano. If not, he'll get help from a pianist in composing the music of the bridges where a difficult chord change occurs. The latter is what Walter did to most Mariah songs like Hero, Anytime You Need A Friend, All I Want For Christmas. That is also the reason why Walter never wrote hit songs without Mariah, because he isn't an accomplished songwriter.

Walter is definitely a marvellous producer. He's co produced oscar winning songs. Walter should be known more as a producer. Even he agrees on that.

Just another trivia-Walter has never contributed to the lyrics of any song. He isn't a lyricist or even a co lyricist. That alone ends the debate whether Walter is a songwriter or not, because he isn't.

Walter Afanasieff isn't even remotely "The man behind Mariah's Music Box and AIWFCIY"
Music Box has songs whose lyrics were written by Mariah solo. Hero, Anytime You Need A Friend, Dreamlover all have Mariah as the solo lyricist. It was Mariah who came up with the melody and Walter was someone who helped her in composing difficult chord changes which could very well have been the work of a pianist too. Walter just co-composed the melody and was the co-producer. Mariah basically did 70-90% of the writing job on these songs solo, then how can Walter be "THE Man" behind the success?

Walter has been an excellent producer and he has a magnificent career as a producer/co-producer. Not as a songwriter. Walter should be known for the actual work that he did.

I am so happy I am not alone in wanting the title changed, thank you. I really don't have a clue what possessed a follow musician to make such an untruthful title. Walter did an amazing job on I Knew I Loved You, but when it comes to Mariah Carey, it's never for, it's with or solo. The conversation that really needs to start happening is conversations about top lining (mental songwriting) because it's just as real as non-top lining is. And until we have those much-needed conversations, there will always be a question among the ignorant of whether or not Mariah actually writes her songs, and that's not fair at all.

Sad that Walter was just a product of Sony prison and stabbed Mariah in the back after she trusted him for so many years. No wonder she talks very little about him since 1998. Tommy even held a knife to Mariah’s cheek right in front of Walter and someone else and no one protected Mariah. He may be very talented but he is a small man.

We weren’t there, we don’t know the dynamics of the entire relationship. I don’t meddle into my friends relationships. I don’t think Mariah should hold Walter accountable for an incident like that. I would be just as scared as Mariah, if the knife incident happened. Mariah should learn to forgive and leave things in the past. I love her, but her biggest flaw is being so grudge-mental. Walter has asked to be forgiven, and he shows remorse. Mariah is the bad guy here.
