Mellow
Walter Mitty and His Makeshift Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

What a beautiful day to be a jellyfish
Let the wind control
Let the sun sink in

Got a book in my hands and a smile on my face, I kinda like this place
With my hands in my pockets
And I'm feeling alright
Humming something that sounds like penny wise

I've got some fears that I'm ready to
Meet, but as for now I kinda like my seat
On the curb as I watch the whole the world fly by
Everyone complaining of this shitty life
But I don't mind the smell of my own shit

You see the world is like a yellow light
You can shoot right through or stop at the line

But i'm not really feeling yellow
I'm kinda feeling more mellow
I've got a good friend moving off of my street
And a girl on my mind who's really getting to me
Everyone's telling me who to be
Telling me to sort out my priorities

You can call me crazy, say i'm running out of time

But i got this funny feeling I'll be fine
Yeah, I've got this funny feeling I'll be fine

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Walter Mitty and His Makeshift Orchestra's song "Mellow" convey a sense of freedom and contentment. The opening lines, "What a beautiful day to be a jellyfish/Let the wind control/Let the sun sink in," suggest a desire to let go of control and surrender to the beauty of the world. The singer is happy to be where they are, with a book in hand and nothing to do but soak in the sunlight. They're humming a tune that sounds like Pennywise, a punk rock band, letting us know that they're feeling carefree and relaxed.

The singer goes on to say that they have fears they're ready to face but that, for now, they're content to sit on the curb and watch the world go by. They notice that everyone seems to be complaining about the "shitty life" they lead, but the singer doesn't mind the smell of their own shit. This suggests that they're comfortable with who they are and are willing to let others think what they will.

The chorus of the song is particularly powerful, with the singer stating that they're feeling "mellow" rather than "yellow." The world is like a yellow light, which can either be ignored or stopped at, but the singer is content to take their time and move at their own pace. They have a friend moving away and a girl on their mind, and although others are telling them what to do, they feel confident that everything will work out.

Overall, "Mellow" is a song about finding peace in the midst of chaos. The singer is happy to let go of control and embrace the world around them. Despite their fears and worries, they're confident that everything will work out just fine.

hello everyone, its the Walter guy here.... not sure if im talking into the void, but I wanted to let y'all know I released an album of WMAHMO b-sides called Puddles of Alligators a few weeks ago and the original recording of Mellow is on it. I get a lot of people asking me to put it on an album and it's found its home there! But let's be honest, you are probably so used to this live recording that the original home recording will probably be a LET DOWN!!!! but enjoy the let down nonetheless :)
