Waltz
Waltz - Eugene Onegin Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

sometimes I wonder what will ever become of me
and if life's worth it's living at all
sometimes I smile at the ones who think they've got life down
and they say that I'm living it wrong
as the days pass by
I watch as the net closes in
as they circle around in my head
turning and winding
in circles, in circles they spin
never ending beginning the end
look now sweet child
deep into my room
the door is open and the air is warm
close your eyes
feel the sweet, sweet symphony of sighs
sometimes it would feels so right
if the angels called me to the sky
sometimes it feels good just to be alive
though our paths are blind
I can see a lightened end on mind
still now I search
for the spirit that torments my soul
as the priest shields his face from the wind
looking at lost life and darkness
my eyes shall not see
makes me laugh when he calls it all sin
you're all slaves of the priest
and you'll just sing it over
and over, and over, and over

and over, and over, and over
and over

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Waltz - Eugene Onegin's song Waltz are a reflection on the uncertainty of life and contemplations on the worth of living. The first stanza presents a somber tone, where the singer wonders what will become of them and if life is even worth living at all. They contrast their unsureness with the people who think they know the answers to life and deem the singer's way of living as wrong.

In the second stanza, the singer describes being trapped in their own thoughts, unable to escape the cycle of worry and doubt that plagues their head. The analogy of a net closing in and encircling them demonstrates the suffocating nature of their thoughts. However, the third stanza shifts to a more inviting atmosphere. The singer invites a child to look deep into their room, where the door is open, and the air is warm. They ask the child to close their eyes and feel the sweet symphony of sighs.

The fourth stanza goes back to the singer's mindset, reflecting on how sometimes death feels so right, whereas other times, just being alive feels good. Despite their conflicted feelings, they claim to see a lightened end in mind, signifying that they might still have hope. Finally, in the last stanza, the singer criticizes the priest's views on sin and calls out the people who blindly follow the priest's words like slaves. The repetition of "over and over" emphasizes the cycle that people tend to fall into, where they repeat the same things without questioning them.

I've played in the Met Opera Orchestra for 27 years and I never get tired of playing this waltz or the other wonderful dance numbers in "Onegin"

This is the most powerful Waltz in history of music and a masterpiece all on its own for its beauty and creativity. Most people know Tchaikovsky's waltzes are the greatest ever composed. But this waltz from Eugene Onegin Opera is different. It has a powerful story and libretto tied to it that sets the entire drama into motion. Even before I heard the libretto, I felt the music itself evoked such powerful emotions in typical dialogue-lyrical Tchaikovskian pathos. Once you hear the libretto, you will remember it forever what each and every section of the music is conveying.

The guys ability to write reams of well known tunes is astonishing. I still believe he's one of the greatest composers that ever lived.

Matter of opinion, but still...cringe

Agreed, but Swan Lake may give it run for the money. His waltzes were his greatest contribution..
